Was Meryl Streep meant to be viewed as a beautiful woman?

Because in my opinion she is not and never was. Very average, pale looking. Was she seriously meant to be portrayed as a girl akin to the high school crush all of the guys wanted in this movie? I very much got that impression, and I can't agree with it at all. Felt miscasted in that regard, not in the acting department of course, that's how she has gotten "all" the roles over the years.

Two guys wanted her, not 'all of the guys'. Just because you find her average in looks doesn't mean others won't find her attractive. You seem to be critiquing her looks rather than her talents -- are Walken and De Niro especially incredibly better looking than she is? Or do you only critique the looks of women?

reply

Walken and De Niro are not, but that's not my or the movie's point. They aren't being used for that type of role, it's Meryl who is. And I'd add John Cazale's character. They were also married IRL.

reply

Really? I'd say both were considered handsome young chaps that girls liked and were very popular, especially De Niro's character -- girls are staring dreamily at him and he gets kissed playfully by the older women, etc.

I would agree with you if Streep was actually an ugly woman, since that would be ridiculous for her to be cast in this role with two handsome men after her, but you and I both know that she's not ugly, so I don't see why it's an issue. She's not your cup of tea, OK fair enough, but do you honestly think she would have gotten this role had she been considered ugly by most people?

I agree with you that De Niro and Walken's looks are not the point of the film, and I would add Streep's looks to that.

reply

Maybe you watch too many skanks in porn movies.

reply

Nope, I don't even watch porn movies. Most of those are nasty looking.

Meryl Streep was considered to be a great beauty when this film was made. (And for many years after). She was gorgeous in Manhattan and Kramer vs Kramer. She soon started taking roles that emphasized character over everything, not focusing on looks.

There is always going to be some doofus who makes negative comments on an actresses looks. Streep was lovely in this movie, and it's totally believable that Walken and DeNiro loved her. Both men were looking mighty damn good themselves.

reply

No, Meryl is meant to be viewed as a goddess.

She looked great in this movie.

It was a small town.

And she looked pretty good. Not a Victoria's Secret model, but she's a nice looking woman.

reply

Although I find her politics vile she was very attractive when younger and even into middle age. You also have to keep in mind that this was a very working class town of Eastern European people and she looks the part as the European girl next door.

reply

She was beautiful. Real world, small, industrial town in PA beautiful. Not Hollywood , nose job, botox and lip injection beautiful. Perfect casting.

These small American towns are strange when it comes to couples. The pickings are small and a lot of times you see a good looking woman with a rather ugly dude and visa-versa. I've seen it first hand myself, so it's not that far fetched that two handsome guys are vying for a plain looking girl in a small Pennsylvania town circa 1960s.
