Are we supposed to hate Lois Chiles' character?

She's entitled and obviously stole someone's fiance. But other than that, the "suspects" were mostly unlikable themselves and Chiles' respective grievances with most of them were totally justified.

She does have an ugly character, but she didn’t deserve what happened to her.

Yes, she did “steal” her friend’s fiancé, but she was set up to do so. It was all part of Jackie and Simon’s plan.

Jackie and Simon are disgusting, despicable murderers. They planned Linnet’s murder so thoroughly and meticulously. All so they could get her money. Having each other wasn’t enough— they had to be rich and were willing to go to such lengths to get it.

How could Jackie endure the idea of Simon having sex with Linnet? Yes, he didn’t really love her— it was just part of the plan. But that makes it so gross. So sick.

Their greed was stronger than their love.

Not necessarily, but we're supposed to believe that other people hate her. She's actually right in most of her conflicts - her father's lawyer is a crook, that fancy-ass doctor is a quack, her maid is a fool to run after a married man, etc. She's someone who calls people on their bullshit (so much so it's amazing a man could make a fool of her), which is totally the opposite of the gracious, ladylike, charitable behavior expected of an heiress of that era.

If she'd ever punched up rather than down, I might have liked her.

I liked her more than the script probably wanted me to.

That was my take on it exactly. Linnet is a tough, no-nonsense business woman, and she is not diplomatic when she criticizes people for what she (usually rightly) perceives as foolish behavior. Her worst fault is having a slightly abrasive personality, but even that's only going to be directed at you if you're an idiot.

In the book she was very young, like 18 when the story opens, and British. For girls of her age and class, being forthright and tactless was simply not done!

Which is why I'm okay with an American actress being hired to play the role, even then Americans put less value on tact and more on speaking their minds. Pity they couldn't hire one who was a bit more talented, but at least Chiles looked stunning in all those expensive gowns so her performance wasn't entirely without merit.

No. Just her performance.
DREADFUL.
