Compared to the BBC remake...

I think this film is great, but has anyone seen the version done for the Poirot series, with David Suchet? I can't imagine it's better, but I'm guessing the running time is shorter and they couldn't possibly cram all that information about all those people in such a sort time. Can anyone compare?

I'm getting the boxset of Suchets Poirot for Crimble, so I'll let you know in the New Year. Unless somebody beats me to it of course.

the david suchet one sticks to the story a lot more i thought and i also thought that, with an except of a few characters, the casting was a lot better. of course, david suchet just is poirot and a lot more convincing!

Well, the david suchet/bbc-version is very much closer to the book, which could be considered better, I guess.

But in my opinion, it lacks some nerve which I think is very strong in the 1978-version.
Could be me having very special feelings toweards the 1978-version, because I've seen it a douzen of times since I was a kid.
Besides I thought the actors AND the charachters were better in the old version, like Rosalie.

What I liked about the new version is the carachters not appearing in the older film.

I personally like both versions - each of them has something special.
Although I think David Suchet makes better Poirot...
Music, screenplay and acting is generally great here.

The Suchet Poirots are not made by the BBC but by their commercial rivals, ITV. I don't know if this is the case here, but the BBC America channel shows many programmes which the BBC did not make, which often leads to confusion.

I prefer the 1978 version. I never much liked Suchet in the role. His acting is fine, and the personality he convays is more like the Poirot of the books than anyone else but he doesn't really look the part except for the moustache and clothing. To me Ustinov is Poirot. I watched him before I read the books and tend to prefer the films he was in to the books themselves.

Hidyho!

reply

You're crazy! While I enjoy Ustinov, Suchet is exactly like the character in the books and more entertaining as well.

reply

Didn't like the remake much. Too many characters (though I realise it was more faithful to the book) and variable performances. It also looked cheap. The film's production values were much higher.

The 1978 film is better. Better performances, nicer movie in general.

I haven't seen the David Suchet version, but if it follows the book more closely than the Peter Ustinov version does, then I probably wouldn't like it, since I don't care for the DEATH ON THE NILE book; I find it overlong, overstuffed with characters, and generally tedious. The Ustinov movie, however, succeeds in making the story fun (and even profound) because it "streamlines" it. As a matter of fact, the Ustinov DEATH ON THE NILE is one of my favorite movies of all time.

In some ways the Suchet episode resembles the book more closely, with the number of characters etc. But it makes some very bizarre changes, including an ending that is very odd indeed. i like the ustinov film much better.

reply

I have to agree with you. The Ustinov movie also has a better atmosphere. The Suchet series truly got ruined after 2000.
