Dawn of the Dead (Original) or Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Me,I like the Original.

I saw the original many years ago. I remembered that I disliked it but didn't remember much more than that. Anyhow, being a fan of zombie movies I figured that it's a classic and I ought give it another chance.

And I was pleasantly surprised.

But I absolutely loved the remake. So I'm going with that.

ORIGINAL

i like both, big original fan, generally zombie fan since the 80's when i was a kid, seen most zombie films out there and think Snyder did a decent job with the remake.

better than most remakes out there

reply

They're both pretty awesome, but the original wins just by a hair or two.

Original. I hated the remake on my first viewing, because it was SO different from Romero's. Where was the close-knit group? What's with all the characters there just to die?

Over time, I've grown to enjoy the remake, but Romero's wins hands-down. I could watch this and "The Thing" for the rest of my life and never tire of it.

I love to love my Lisa.

remake. this one is overrated. Goofy bikers... pie fight... and a leading lady that was dead weight.

reply

Original. Because the zombies didn't suddenly STOP ATTACKING when the humans were cornered.

Yeah man same here. Watched it last night and didn't like it at all.
Over the top acting funny jombies same jombies smiling jombies. Jombie that were reactive to fire and water sprinkler(seriously). Atrocious acting specially that flyboy guy was running like a clown in the whole movie.if this was made today people would have laughed on it. Overrated movie.

reply

Yea. The original was goofy. Especially the lame bikers. Movie snobs usually choose the original of anything, despite it being inferior.

reply

NAH, M7, I juzzzzt lyk it cuzzz i lyk it.

Honestly, I first watched it with a friend of mine who, up to that point, hadn't seen any "older" movies. Which is fine. She loved Resident Evil, and we decided to give the original Dawn a go. We both loved it, and were sat at the edge of our seats! I didn't find Stephen's acting atrocious, but he was certainly the weakest acted of the original four.

No no, M7, URRR opinin is rong ;)

reply

you are correct sir. there were no characters in the remake, only cliches. i wanted them all to die. i was sort of pleased with the ambiguous ending as they took the boat off into the sunrise and could have lived with that. but when you see the ending after the credits and when they get to island they are all screwed it made me smile. they shouldnt have been trying to leave in the first place

If time is not true, what purpose have watchmakers?

The original had characters like Peter, stephen, Francine and Roger. That was named without reference to any help.

Ana = Nurse
Kenneth = Cop
Michael = TV Salesman for Best Buy
Andre = Thug
Luda = Pregnant Mrs Thug
CJ = Mall cop with the badass 'stache
Bart = Mall cop who was a jerk and followed CJ
Terry = Mall cop who betrayed CJ and fell in love with Nicole
Glen = Older gay guy
Andy = Gun store guy
Norma = Owned the truck with survivors/shot by Andre
Tucker = trucker hat guy
Steve = Jerk who owned the boat
Nicole = Stupid girl who went after the dog
Chips = The dog
Monica = sliced with chainsaw (to be fair, they never said her name in the movie)
D'Wan = Died Without A Name fat woman zombie

Then you have
Vivian = girl zombie
Cora = Ana's coworker
Luis = Ana's husband
Ben Cozine = Fountain Twitcher Zombie
Frank = Nicole's infected father who was killed by Kenneth upon human death/zombie revival.

All of the top of my head. The only characters I CAN'T think of names for is the Sheriff on TV played by Tom Savini (but the guy he yells at in the interview is Danny) and the Doctor Ana was talking to at the very beginning of the movie.

My point is not to be a jerk. (surprising to some out there) It's just to show that sometimes some people can remember all the names. Sometimes they can't. That being said, I like the Original DAWN better. Like them both, but for different reasons.

Quick question. The "kinda douchy sort of gay guy" you mentioned... which character would that be? Bart? If so, that's funny. His character was a sexist male pig, but the actor is gay in real life.

I'm going to pass on your opinion in favor of having my own

Monica = sliced with chainsaw (to be fair, they never said her name in the movie)

As I recall, Monica was suppose to have been a stripper Steve knew/found.

Nicole = Stupid girl who went after the dog

Okay. That's not fair. I've been defending that character for years. She lost her mom, then her dad. Chips (dog) became the constant in her life. Just like a person who rushes their pet to vet when they're sick; doesn't matter how much the operation cost - save their loved one. The same argument can be made on Ripley. She went to save her cat, Jones while the ship was ticking to explosion. You wouldn't call her stupid. Jones like Chips was her constant.

As for the main question. I like both for different reasons.

The original is and always will be the quintessential zombie film. I love it like it's my child it will never be topped. I dug the remake the first time I saw in theaters (for what it was) - but to be perfectly honest it seems to be getting worse for me as time goes on. I watched it again recently and found myself cringing a few times at how moronic and juvenile it was. Something about the sprinting zombies that don't work - and the zombies in the remake felt more like vampires on steroids than walking corpses. Meh. A good movie but doesn't compare to the original.

I don't think the character was necessarily stupid going after the dog, but she was extremely reckless, and the entire fate of everyone else who died rests squarely on her shoulders. No, she wasn't thinking rationally at the time she went over there, but her actions directly got Tucker killed, forced the remaining survivors to accelerate their plans to leave the mall, and led a huge number of the hoard through the sewers into their safe haven.

I mean, think about it. She doomed a majority of the characters because she went after that dog. Maybe if they'd waited and went after the weapons, the same outcome would have taken place, but we don't know for sure. We DO know that her actions led to the outcome it did.

As an animal lover, I can give her a pass, she wasn't stupid going after the dog. But I do blame her for being totally reckless, and I put the blame of everyone who died between the mall and the boat is solely on her.

I love to love my Lisa.

I really liked them both.

Original. Memorable characters. Sometimes funny, and drew me in. Remake I found (mostly) dull and had boring "characters".
