Damiens accent

Why does Damien have an English accent when he's lived in America almost his entire life?

seconded--you ask a very good question!

Thank you.

"Mahk? Why are you running away from me, Mahk?"

He lived the first five years of his life in England, didn't he?

reply

And it begins. And he lived in America from age 5 through twelve in Damien Omen II. Being around American accents this long he would have lost his English accent. He didn't have an English accent in the third Omen movie.

And he was played by Australian Sam Neill.

As I said.

You seem to be under the impression that I'm arguing with you, I'm really not. Yes, Damien's accent was odd in the movie, which is why I quoted him in my initial response and made fun of it.

reply

Gotcha. Thanks.

New Zealander born in Northern Ireland.

He's seen holding the hand of the President of the US, but maybe this meant he remained in England for a number of years.

But then Ann says to Richard "You've loved him for 11 years!" . That seems to indicate he lived with them for 11 years.
Not sure.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Good reply.

No, he moved to Richard's in Chicago right after that.

Just watched it today and it had me annoyed too. Gregory Peck isn't British, nor was his mom, in THe Omen.

My conclusion to the question is that they picked a British kid to play Damien because they thought he looked like an older version of the first kid. ???

Pretty dumb.

reply

Well yeah, but they lived in England and their kid picked up the accent from school, etc. That's very typical of the kids of first-generation immigrants.

That said the OP is absolutely right, it makes no sense that he'd retain the accent after moving to the U.S. at five.

reply

The actor grew up outside of the US, didn't he? I guess he just didn't bother to work with a voice coach to adapt a more Americanized effect.

Another random thought - perhaps Damien's way of speaking was to suggest a certain level of breeding and elitism. But if he went to the same schools that Mark did, it's odd that Mark didn't likewise have those affectations.

They hired a British teen.

reply

From the age of 5 until starting at the military academy, Damien may have been schooled by an English teacher (not someone who teaches English, but someone who IS English), had an English nanny, or do they even have specialist "English/British" schools in the USA (that's a question, I don't know the answer).

Plenty of reasons why a child moving from one country to another at the age of 5 might retain their accent.

reply

Because in movies, all villains have British accents, didn't cha know? ;)
