What was that doohickey on the hood?


That little loop of what looked like plastic tubing. What was that for?

Good question. I'm not sure either, but I think they use those to pull the hood up. On the other hand, there are scenes where it looks like wires coming out of that loop. So, I'm just totally guessing.

They are hood locks. There are two, one on each side, near the firewall. Very common on old muscle cars. It is a post that sticks up thru a hole with a pin to latch it down. The pin is held by a wire.

Only near the firewall on a Vette with a reverse opening hood. On the early 70's Mopars they were at the front. They were taken from the Trans Am racing circuit car look which was hot at the time. Those race cars used them to hold the hood closed (no hood springs and fiberglass hoods) but on my 70 Challenger they were purely for looks. The hood had a regular release above the grill. Some people put small locks on them though but it was stupid, they rattled and banged all over the place.
