Hamill can't act to save his life.

I caught this on TCM and Hamill is laughingly pathetic as an actor.

He was hit and miss. When he seemed upset about the car being stolen from the school, he seemed legitimate, but most of it was hammy. Then again, it was supposed to be a comedy, so maybe they wanted to indulge in the ham.

STARS WARS he did well. Especially the last part of RETURN. When the others were fighting with Teddy Bears, Hamill was really awesome.

He was technically on hiatus from "Luke Skywalker" when he made this film. So it's no surprise it appears some of his acting strengths are hit/miss here.

Robbins wanted Hamill for this film. The timing worked. Downtime from SW shooting to filming this, then rebounding...

I agree, some scenes he was dead-on. Others, not so much. But overall he pulled this film nicely.

You're nuts. He was great in this.

Mark IS NOT a pathetic actor, he made the Star Wars films IMO but, he did overact sometimes but I enjoyed the film even though it was a bit of a strange/cheesy in places.

Annie Potts is wonderful as always & Mark is just doo dreamy, I got over any problems.

It was fun & pretyy enjoyable, that's all. I wonder if Mark was recognised a lot while making it?

The way people judge these days, they get everything backwards. Mark Hamill was great in this. He played the role with heart, as he does with everything. There's actors today who are just horrible by comparison. Take Carl from The Walking Dead for example. Yet that kid has a fan base that will defend him to death.

I thought Hamill was pretty good in this spot. It's a slight (although I find it fun!) film anyway, totally harmless, so I don't see much of a big deal here (then again, I'm not bugged by anyone until they raise up on me, so on a personal level there's that as well, and Hamill seems like a decent person. To boot, Love his Joker!).

I also thought Hamill was good in this. He's not doing Hamlet-- he's playing a goofy, over-earnest teen.

I don't know man, when I was right out of high school around that same time, that is how I acted, and I wasn't even in a big city on my bicycle looking for my stolen car!

Old thread, but I just watched the film--which I do every few years--so I figured, "What the hell?" Mark did a decent job, but the movie really does belong to Annie. He was earnest, but at times a little shrill. Overall, I found him winning and earnest and he fit the role just fine.

Not every film is an oscar contender and the cinematography in the film reminded me of the quality you'd see in the CHIPS TV show a few years later. As I type this, I'm looking up the DP's name (Frank Stanley) and...yup...the vast, vast majority of his work was in TV.

Still, enjoyable but Annie totally makes the film a prize.
