Modern Day Telling of Billy the Kid?

Did anyone else see the parallels of this story and that of Billy the Kid? An outlaw, popular with the people, on the run from a not-so-lawful sheriff. Makes a late night deal with the governor of New Mexico during an election year only to have it broken. Finally cornered by the sheriff, he "dies" and becomes a legend? Maybe I've got an overactive imagination.

I did not think anyone else could come up with that plot other than me. I think Peckinpah had a south west obsession with the Billy the Kid legend. Kristofferson and Peckinpah in both Pat Garrett and Billy Kid & Convoy does prove it. Plus the obsession with filming in NM. I thought about this during the fall this year.
