When Sally says to Bob at the end...

(after Bob comes home, and after he finds out about the affair) she tells him, "I love you"...does she? I never felt any love between the 2 of them. More of a marriage that they just got used to.

She just seemed really unassertive and assumed a very "wifey" role w/ Bob. He kind of molded her into submission. So, I don't see that as being love. And I KNOW she was crazy about Luke, but do you guys think she still actually LOVES Bob?

reply

Yes she loved Bob, but she was'nt happy with being with Bob. She was in a helpless situation cause it was'nt going anywhere, and it got worse when he came home in such a mess. She felt sorry for him, but she still loved him dearly. Luke though filled all the gaps in her life that she wanted, there were no "needs" anymore from bob.

So, in what way does she LOVE him then?

reply

She loves the surfing, ambitious man she married and she cares deeply about the man who's returned. The fact that they've changed as a result of the different experiences they had while apart doesn't alter her love. The future of their love is probably doomed but she can say that with genuine sincerity at that moment.
How many current marriages today will face the same conflicted emotions the characters in this film experience? Lots of info on high suicide risks, PTSD has entered the vocabulary but I can't recall divorce stats.
