jane fonda supported the viet cong, said that American POWs were being treated humanely, declared any US soldier who said they had been tortured liars and called US soldiers war criminals. I believe there was even a photo of her sitting on a viet cong artillery piece that would be used to kill or wound US soldiers.
Then she plays the role of a woman who is in love with a Vietnam war veteran. It makes me sick.
it amazes me that, after 40 years, people are still going to single her out for special blame. My brother-in-law told me he was angry at her because she was responsible for several deaths following her actions. Well, if you want to STILL be mad about that, go ahead. It seems to me you should be more angry at Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon who are responsible for the deaths of 55,000 Americans; funny how the folks who "hate" Jane never seem to connect the dots here...and as far as Parties go: 1 Democrat and 1 Republican made all the mess, so the partisans among us don't want to bring that up. Concentrate on the story and the characters in the movie, folks; and get over the 60s, please!

Jane Fonda had the same intentions that many did at the time. Exposing the fact that our leaders invaded countries, and used media propaganda to dupe the public into hating the country we invaded. And our soldiers are nothing but puppets on a string. They fight for a tyranny whether they know it or not. They support our leaders....not us. If our leader told them to shoot us all, they would waste no time. That's why soldiers are war criminals. They deserve no honor from me or any other citizen. They never did a damn thing for me....only for Uncle Sam.
Your condemnation of the grunt GI's in Vietnam is simplistic and sickening. We were 18-year olds. How politically savvy do you expect kids right out of high school to be? We didn't think we were fighting for "Uncle Sam" or our leaders. We were mainly draftees--that means we had no choice. We were told the VC were connected to communism. The "domino theory" prevailed in politics. We thought we were fighting for our country. If there is any blame it lies squarely and only with those politicians who sent us over there. After forty years it's time to drop this idiotic call-the-soldiers-war-criminals crap and tell it like it is. The military-industrial complex was to blame just as they are for any war we send our kids to fight. It was and is all about bucks.

If there is any blame it lies squarely and only with those politicians who sent us over there.I agree with that and yet would add the news media did a weak job by reporting the war as something necessary (as I recall), at least the first few years.

It's five years after the OP posted, but even in 2008 he should have gotten over his peculiar obsession with Jane Fonda. Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger did far more damage to American Vietnam War servicemen than did a thousand Jane Fondas, for no other reason than that most American POWs were captured during the Nixon presidency. And I won't even go into their war crimes, which damaged the reputation of America and wounded and caused injury and death to hundreds of thousands of human beings on both sides of the war. I've never understood why Americans gave Nixon and Kissinger a pass, but I haven't stewed on that regrettable fact for the last four decades. So why can't people who whine about Jane Fonda forget about her much more minor offense?
Final note: I rarely comment on this subject, but as a Vietnam veteran, I feel deeply grateful to Jane Fonda and others who helped make a great and important film that humanized the plight of my brother vets. America's always been good at sending soldiers to war, but it's not so good about taking care of them when they come home damaged. At least she used her craft to help bring attention to a problem that still persists.
Jane Fonda was in this movie because the movie was her idea. She had the concept & hired a screen writer after discussion with her friend Ron Kovic (Born on the 4th of July). She also picked the director.
