Okay so I'll probably be out of college by the time someone answers this, but I'll try anyway. I watched this on a "family" station last night and was taken aback by a rather awkward cut to them in bed. Was something edited out? Or, more simply. do we see them go at it?

i don't think it was cut much if at all in the version i've just watched. It didn't start till midnight and ran around the 118 mins stated on the main page.
i can't see any reason to edit the scene as it must have appeared at about 1:30am
when i watched it. personally i think it was intentional as a sex scene wouldn't have added much to the way their relationship developed or to the movie in general, in fact, probably the opposite in my opinion.
And you only had to wait a month for a reply! lucky you, i've waited alot longer.
I was much more taken with the end of that scene. Fonda and Caan take a very long time staring into each others eyes before kisssing. It's very romantic and real. The moment conveys a much deeper connection than a straightforward sex scene. The whole film is full of moments like that. Long silences that are filled with meaning.
