About the extended ending

Just to let you know my friends that the Holocaust 2000 ending that I am only aware of is the room blowing up with the son Angel, and the Bible quote then coming up with the saying of Christ defeating evil. This is the version in America under the title Holocaust 2000. I have the US Vestron video for a number of years, and this is the ending with the explosion. It is NOT under the title The Chosen. Also, the TV version in the USA is under Holocaust 2000. When this was shown on CBS, it was exactly like the video, minus the Agostina Belle nudity. And when it was transfered from CBS to ABC for their late night movie series, as many American International films were, it was the same ending and cuts. I am assuming this film was originally in Europe under the title The Chosen with the shorter ending. And I must say my friends, hate me if you like, I love this much better than The Omen films. As a matter of speaking, it has it's originality of letting Christ win over evil. Oh yes, I know Christ wins in The Exorcist. But I still believe The Final Conflict copied Holocaust 2000. And to me, this is the film Alberto DeMartino should get credit for, as many can leave the theater knowing evil will always lose. Omen and Damien: Omen II are to me are not only money grabbers (I know virtually every film is), but marketing ploys to get you to come back. To be on a high budget and have slick murders is not that entertaining to many, let's face it. This film is just right. Also, ignore any TV version, since the love scene between Douglas and Belle is true romance.

P.S. This is also Ennio Morricone best soundtrack to date: spiritual, sensual, and power filled!

Enjoy, Joseph

Here in Germany, we had some TV-Versions over the last year. It was the version with the opening ending every time. But: In the late 80s there was also shown the version, where Robert/Kirk is blowing everyone up, including him. The UK-Video and italian DVD contain the opening ending. I also saw the bad ending only in this TV-Version and the US-Video.

In my opinion the US-Video contains the original version, since the opening ending is real "opening" and the version also got some audio jumps in the music due to the changes in the open ending-version.

By the way: There is also a german comparison between the newer german TV-Version and the US-Video at

Dear scatcc,

Thanks for that address. I did check it out. It had to be only in Europe that shorter version. Yours, Joseph

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS:

I liked the longer ending from "The Chosen" version better.
Since it showed Kirk Douglas stopping his son's evil plans

This is the only version I have ever seen.

I agree that it is a more satisfying ending to this film.

For a movie about the apocalypse, it cheered me up no end. Maybe it's the fact that Douglas keeps grinning at inappropriate moments and recovers from grotesque situations (including the death of his wife) surprisingly quickly.

Then there are the delightfully incongruous moments such as Douglas caught in a life threatening situation in an asylum in which staff look like they're being beaten to death and a man cuts his wrists after attempting to strangle Douglas. We then see him walking up the stairs unescorted with a nonchalance that suggests he had just left an uneventful board meeting. Later he is trapped in the same asylum and manages to walk out of the place after an altercation with the residents. Aren't asylums meant to be lockdowns or something? Another joy is the piano concerto played over what should be a sombre discussion on abortion.

Then there are the puzzling leaps of illogic. Such as Douglas putting two and two together about a biblical prophecy and his plant. This delightful overkill includes an increasingly shrill chorus of voices seemingly endlessly pointing out portentious numbers to an increasingly peturbed Douglas. Is he catching on? Apparently not, judging by the very next scene where he is inexplicably extolling the virtues of nuclear energy to a professor. His pregnant girlfriend is terrified of church crosses but it later transpires there is nothing sinister about her unborn child. So it was just a touch of morning sickness then? You know, the type brought on by, er, mornings and the merest peak at a church steeple? And let me give any would-be assassin a piece of advice. If the guy you want to kill is tied down to a trolley in a straight jacket (that is, completely at your mercy) don't...untie.....his......bonds. Got that?

I heartily recommend this film. There is a dream sequence in it that will elicit a Kirk-like gurn of unnalloyed pleasure for days after.

Yeah, there was a lot of similarities with the Omen movies as to background stuff.
