new DVD release???

Anybody seen the new release? CD Universe is taking orders but has it as a back order. I am trying to find out if it is the uncut, original version. Thanks to anyone with information to share.

You know, I just got through watching "Z channel: a magnificent obsession" again after a year has passed. To this day, I still find it mind-boggling that know one has a decent print of "China 9, Liberty 37." The "Z channel" documentary displays a sparkling new transfer in it's original scope of "C9L37." C'mon somebody! release the real print of this film! Well...hopefully..maybe "TCM" might show it.Before 2010......I hope.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.

Yesterday I saw at the Portuguese Film Archives, a mint copy of the original film, format 2.35:1, perfectly balanced sound (you can hear the wind blowing softly, the water rustling over the girl's naked breasts on the waterfall... as well as the bullets going into the wood plancks at a street corner) running slightly over 103 minutes.

I pity those of you who saw copies shortened by the scissors of censors, whatever their legal status is.

This film is a work of art, complete with ethnic subtext (each character's racial origin identifiable by their speach accent, and lingo), realistic morals (less cultured viewers will be surprised how in the 19th century a law abiding man would have to kill another because his woman had slept with him, yet find it ok for another to rape the said wife), beautiful location shots (it does not matter it's not in The States, but in Spain, and Italy - the mountains are real, the waterfall is real... even if they had to had heated water for the actors to swim in it), and political analysis (the relationship between an elected government and an enlarging company, and their simultaneous attack on the lands of a former gunman)...

Cut or reduce any of these elements, and you'll have a so-so film, but not what Monte Hellman and his cast and crew laboriously, and lovingly, have created.

I'll be back to this page, wishing as you are that one they we, film lovers, adult enough to know how different a woman and a man's body are, can watch this film again in the confort of our homes. On DVD or whatever.

Waiting for a bluray edition, maybe from criterion...

Some movies are meant to be seen!

A year or so ago Encore Western Channel broadcast this and I measured the dvd I burned from that and it appears to be a full 102 minutes. I have a nice clear copy so feel fortunate what with all the terribly slashed and very bad transfers for sale on Amazon...I see one is only 78 minutes long...What a rip-off.

FWIW, I'm watching some version of this now, on cable TV, and it's listed at 110 minutes. Maybe that's partly due to NTSC conversion? Still, not 8 minutes worth.

It has obvious, and shaky, pan-scan, though the visual quality is otherwise pretty good.
