A Dismal Affair *Spoilers*

In every sense of the phrase.

This is the first Monte Hellman movie I didn't like. Simultaneously, it is the first movie Warren Oates was in where I was not that impressed with his part.

What an abortive infatuation that was between the Agutter character and Testi. It doesn't work at all.
I enjoyed the way the stabbing was handled. But it totally takes away any chance of sympathy for the Agutter character.
I really would have rather seen them all dead than to have them all live at the end.
As it turns out, not much is resolved. I can appreciate it if that is the intent, but it still doesn't make for a good movie.

Extremely tiresome and annoying music too.

The only thing I really liked was the Peckinpah scene. His character was really well done.

All of this doesn't take away any enthusiasm for Hellman's new movie though. First in 20 years.

Thank you, thinkkam-2. I couldn't agree more. One of the worst Westerns I have seen from it's time. I wish Warren Oates had not signed up for this. Among other things, Agutter was a bad choice,I think.

Indeed, her actions led to the deaths of Oates' entire family except for the widowed sister-in-law about to give birth. Agutter should have just put a gun in her mouth at the end.
