Jenny Agutter Nude on Original VHS Version ???

I remember watching this on HBO years ago and I think Jenny Agutter had one or two nude scenes in this movie. I recently bought this on the current released DVD and it looks like the nudity was eliminated. Can anyone shed some light on this?

reply

the VHS has the original movie. The DVD release is heavily edited

I also saw it on HBO, I think. Agutter was nude in a few scenes, one in which she sported sexy very hairy armpits.

The VHS release (on Bingo Video) is also derived from an edited (for television?) print that cuts Jenny Agutter's nude scenes. The junk quality DVDs currently available all appear to derive from this same print (probably from the actual VHS, judging by how bad they look). A remastered, uncut, letterboxed DVD with a commentary by Mr. Hellman would be most welcome. Where are you Anchor Bay (or Blue Underground)?

reply

The film is one of the rare westerns in which the characters are driven by sex and their explicit lovemaking scenes are integral to the film. Seeing the film without the sex scenes (I had a edited video of it that was retitled GUNFIRE) is like seeing FRIDAY THE 13TH without the murders. It's an important film in Hellman's filmography, it's a shame someone can't release this.

The problem is not just that this is edited (you can see Agutter nude in "Walkabout", "Equus", and, hell, even "Logan's Run" if you're interested), but it's also badly panned-and-scanned and severely hacked up in places where they took out the nudity (and perhaps some violence). It's even worse than an edited-for-TV version, which would at least be COMPETENTLY edited and panned-and-scanned.

I don't know of any official video or DVD versions that are uncut, but some bootleggers I know CLAIM to have them (IMDB has edited ME in the past when I gave the names of bootleggers, but write me a personal message if you're interested). Maybe we'll get lucky though and they'll be a decent DVD release, or they'll play it uncut on cable again.

I just watched this movie for the first time. I was expecting it to be poorly directed and from a weak script, but the bad cutting, the bad picture quality (was it taken from the screen?), the poor sound quality and the amateurish editing where the nudity has been removed in a very unrefined manner makes it a dread to watch. From the comments here I can understand that I am not the only one having had this experience with this movie. How sad that a decent copy is apparently not available on DVD. If anyone gets to get their hands one one I would appreciate to be notified. Jenny Agutter deserves better than this. Thanks!

I recently got hold of an uncut version of this. It does have Jenny Agutter's nude scenes, but it's still fullscreen and it still looks like crap. If you're ONLY interest is seeing Agutter naked, I'd just get "Walkabout" where she's completely nude for about five minutes (I guess she was also only about sixteen at the time, but you'd never know it from looking at her). As for this movie, it would probably be better to wait for a re-mastered wide-screen DVD.

Does your "uncut version" have a 103 min run time?

reply

The ENCORE WESTERNS station is running (obviously) the uncut version now.

reply

quick...name a movie where Jenny is NOT nude!!?

reply

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Watching now on TCM, the uncut wide screen version!

reply

I just watched this on Encore Westerns and it had plenty of Jenny Agutter Nudity throughout, Jenny Agutter is a total BABE.

reply

Maybe at one time, but not anamo'. Now she's a living flyspeck.

Let it be unsaid: insignificance is the locus of true increpation.

I obtained an unofficial uncut, widescreen version of the film on DVD-R. It does indeed include all of the most lovely Jenny Agutter. In this picture she actually engages in sex but I also love her in "Walkabout" as well. Perhaps I'm just a dirty old Yank that has a thing for young, pretty, English school-girls walking around in an enticingly short mini-skirt as part of her school uniform.

IMDb is very touchy when it comes to profanity, politically incorrect prose, and bootleggers. Speaking of boots, try to obtain a copy of a 14 year old Jenny in "I Start Counting" A nice cute young girl with sexual dreams of older step-brother even though he may indeed be a serial murderer. And let's don't forget "Logan's Run" which gets an occasional spin in this household as well.

Turner Classic Movies is now showing this uncut and in its original aspect ratio. I've seen stills from it for years, but I watched it for the first time the other night. It was quite good, and the writing was excellent. It had a somewhat stock villan, the unscrupulous railroad tycoon, but just about everything else totally avoided western stereotypes. The "gunslingers" were not superhuman killing machines who fired magic bullets. They were realistic characters who acted in believable ways while driven by all too human passions and foibles. Some even ran away when the shooting started. It's not Citizen Kane, but it was quite surprising.
