quote in other movies too

anyone know what other movie this might have started from or was it this movie. There's a scene when one of the women leaving Lou Peckinpaugh's office asks him to call her and says "put your fingers in the hole" - Now i remember this same bit in Steve Martin's "DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID" which incorporated movies from the 40's. Was there an older movie that this was taken from or did DEAD MEN take it from CHEAP DETECTIVE?

I don't know about that, but Simon also used the joke in "Murder By Death" using a whistle instead of dialing a phone.

Both "The Cheap Detective" and "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" were doing a riff on Lauren Bacall's classic line from the film "To Have and Have Not" -

Bacall's dialogue was: "You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow."

Rachel Ward's line from "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" was: "If you need me, just call. You know how to dial, don't you? You just put your finger in the hole and make tiny little circles."

There were a lot of lines in the movies that riffed Bogart movies. The Lauren Bacall bit has been used many times in its variations.
