Does anyone else think that the movie Airplane is very similar in humor to this one which came out 2 years before Airplane? I kept thinking the two had similar jokes except Airplane took it to an extreme. Anyway, this movie is a gem.
I definitely had an "Airplane!" vibe watching this. If this wasn't an inspiration, it's an incredible coincidence. Great one-liners here – and in "Airplane!" as well. I love them both.
I don't think either film gave birth to the parody. The Zuckers also did Kentucky Fried Movie in 1977, which itself was a product of The Groove Tube. All are parodies of TV and movies in the vein of Airplane and the Cheap Detective, and none can take credit for being the first.
this film was not the first spoof, nor was "airplane!" the last. if you want a real laugh, watch "zero hour!"... the film that was *remade* as "airplane!" somewhat line-for-line (but the original was a drama).
the creators of "airplane!" would VCR late night TV for a local comedy show they did, and one night they caught "zero hour!" -- the rest is, how you say, history.
(the "!" in both titles is essential.)
so yes, they were spoof-minded... but i seriously doubt that they intended to rip-off this film when they had purchased the rights to "remake" another.
Watch "Zero Hour!" (1957), which is the main film being spoofed in "Airplane!" Once, TCM showed "Zero Hour!" then "Airplane!", which works better than reversing the two. Many things in the Fifties movie are parodied, including the food poisoning and the war flashbacks.
