Military Uniforms What Branch?

Were the Military uniforms,insignias,4-stars,white scarves tucked in around neck, and shoulder things correct for 1978?
What branch of the military was it?

Based on my own experiences and our friend Google (link below), I have concluded the uniforms shown in the movie are completely fictional. Hollywood is required to have a certain number of differences between actual military uniforms and the ones shown on screen. Additionally, semi-accurate uniforms didn't become common in films until later, when directors started enlisting (pun intended) the use of military advisors.
In the case of "The Cat From Outer Space", the supposed branch portrayed is United States Army.
I hope this answers your question.

The patch on Gen. Stilton's shoulder is actually a representation of Zorro on his horse, Tornado, rearing up. I remember seeing this as a kid and recognizing it. Plus the patch is huge, much larger than a normal military unit patch.
