I caught this on an OTA broadcast last night.
The way the film lingers on the mundane details of horse raising, but not in a full-of-itself overly-artsy way... I kept switching back to it from network primetime. It was so refreshing from the cut-cut-cut-bam-bam-bam where every shot has a "significant" meaning for some particular plot development or emotional set-up.
In a modern cutting of this film, they'd have about 50 extra shots of the colt's shin, over and over. They'd drag you through the boy getting a beating to jerk as many tears out of the audience as possible. The side plot with the girl jockey would involve some amped up drama and be much more in-your-face girl power. There would be long backlit shots of the leads with "momentous" strings playing in the background.
