Yeah, her character was complaining about being out of breathe after jogging, from all the cigarrettes, but all I could see was a woman who was fun to look at. She made Alan Alda seem studly for at least being his ex-wife.

And was so unnecessary to the story. Obviously they opened up the story to get Fonda down to the beach and into the bikini. I'm just not sure if it is blatant sexism to get her nearly naked for no reason, or if it is meant as a cheesy commercial to plug her fitness videos.

It reminds me of her 60s movies, the camera gawks at her in a bikini, in a towel, topless from behind, getting dressed, getting undressed, applying makeup, bending and strutting around up & down stairs etc etc.

Jane Fonda is a willing participant in this, and I would bet money that she insisted on the exposure. It is one redeeming factor for the film.

reply

I seriously doubt that she had to insist on the exposure. Most 70's and 80's movies like this made full use of the actresses bodies as a selling point. It's how they got men to buy tickets for chick flicks.

Jane was hot, and is still lovely. I just saw her on stage in 33 Variations. Check her out in Cat Ballou(65), Barefoot in the Park(67), and Barbarella(68).

i think she looked too skinny

BrianN - I don't think she sold fitness videos 'til the early '80s (but I could be wrong)

xcalate - I don't think she looked too skinny, I thought she looked near-perfect. She's slender to begin with, agreed...but her thighs looked great, not "anorexic" or anything like that.

Squeeth2 - yeah, I've seen better hairdos but I think JF's beauty shines through.

One thing I really liked about Jane Fonda in this is that (and this comes down to the filmmakers in general; also it was more common in the '70s it seems) she's not trying to come off as younger than she is. As squeeth2 mentioned, her hairdo isn't great - it's obviously an "older" woman's hairdo - and she's not dressed in chippy clothes, yet she is soooo sexy (granted, JF couldn't help but be sexy). She's over 40 and is acting over 40 and is hot as hell.

The only unattractive thing was her constant smoking.

She looked sensational in her bikini.

reply

Fonda was very sultry in this. Shame about her hair though!

Its that man again!!

reply

She looked great because in the '70s, when a lot of Americans were wasting their time with the Royal Canadian Air Force exercise program, Jane Fonda was doing the North Vietnamese Army exercise program.

reply

I hate Fonda's politics but she is one of the sexiest women ever to appear on a movie screen and this scene is one reason why. Then three years later she would even top this one in "On Golden Pond".

reply

Especially when she was in the bathroom with a towel over her.
Her shoulders looked almost like spaghetti.
