Domestic Violence
I saw this many years ago, but didn’t the main character hit his bf and give him a black eye near the beginning of the movie? WTF was up with that. They were depicted as a loving couple so why put that in the movie?

shareYeah that was strange. What's worse is the kind of consequence it has. His partner, the performer, was being a diva and didn't want to get ready. He punches him off screen and moments later she's ready to perform. So if you want things done in your relationship, punch your partner.
This was a pretty good comedy but that seemed so out of place.
Yeah but (as u said) it's done quickly and it's offscreen. Also it's never bought up again in the movie. WHY it's there I don't know. This was done 1978 so maybe back then it was considered OK (strange as that may sound).
shareThe diva threw a tantrum and kicked Renato down as he was putting on her bracelet, accusing him of cheating all the while being SUPER late to her own show and ruining the business then dares Renato to hit her. Gandhi would've lost patience and taken a swing.
Jamie Lee Curtis survived Halloween,a Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train & now she can't poop!
Yes, it was questioned much less back then. So many things were! Don't know if you caught the controversy right after David Bowie died, about his sleeping with a young groupie around that same time - and it was the same disconnect: the standards of two different eras.
Around then - late seventies - we really weren't hearing all that much about domestic violence. Even when it gained a higher profile, people still didn't make the connection between depictions of "funny" violence and what carried into real life.
Now that awareness has penetrated - WOW, it's hard to see spousal violence played for giggles!

Nothing to see here, move along.
Albin had already pushed renato over, which is pretty aggressive. And then he deliberately gaoded him, urging him to hit him etc. he was being extremely provocative. it was not an unprovoked blow.
shareSure, but then you get into "the victim asked for it". Adults are responsible for how they respond to provocation. Verbal provocation never justifies physical violence.
In the news business, you get a real education in how people justify the most appalling violence. That opens your eyes to how it starts on a smaller, more subtle scale.

Well, i think Albin had already been quite rough when he pushes renato over, there seems to be a degree of roughness in their relationship which i think is on both sides.
shareBut still, they are two men.
shareHe was goaded. It can happen. And his boyfriend didn't hold it against him.
