Washington was killed in action. He was awarded the Navy Cross. When I saw the film there was an epilogue (sp?) that gave an update on the main characters after the soccer game.
shareit's been 6 years since your post but, I wonder why they removed the epilogue from the DVD and VHS. I was this movie and the Richard Bong Theater (Misawa JASDF base) when it was first released and, like American Graffiti, it gave some closure to the men in the movie. I wish someone had a copy and could post what it said about each man in the epilogue.

Speaking as someone who's never seen the epilogue, I'm actually thankful for its absence
We learned all we needed to learn with the final narration, living has got to be more important than winning (but saving lives is worth dying for)
