What good were the depositions?

Lieberman gave Freida Maloney's attorney a deposition in return for getting to interview her about the adoption agency. What good does a deposition do her now? She has already been convicted and imprisoned, hasn't she? Besides, the deposition is clearly damning (from the lawyer's reaction), not exculpatory...

As I recall, she was still facing legal proceedings. The information provided by Lieberman would help her attorney defend her. She probably wouldn't have avoided punishment, but it might have reduced her time in prison.
