Yaphet Kotto is very good as Smokey in this film. I found his death scene deeply disturbing and completely unexpected. It is the turning point in the movie - up until this point Schrader has somewhat lightened the film's sober themes with jovial banter and humour but from that point on there are no more smiles.

I was so sad when Smokey died.

Saw this one for the first time and was impressed with the whole production.

Question: Do you think Smokey could have survived if he had gotten inside the car? Or would the paint fumes still have been overwhelming?
