DVD re-release?

Any news on whether or not this underrated gem will see a DVD re-release anytime soon here in the States? A year ago I emailed the company that released the first edition (I think it was Anchor Bay in 2000) but never got a response. Iassumed that after Pryor's passing, there'd be some strong interest in this title, but maybe I'm wrong. If anyone out there has heard anything, please let me know. At this point I'd even be happy just to get a bare-bones release.

it's available (and in print) in a region 2 release from amazon.co.uk.... best bet for now. no word on a re-release

Universal is probably in control of the DVD distribution, and my experience with their Rockford Files set does not leave me with high hopes that we'll see this DVD anytime soon (with Rockford they're dragging their feet on releasing the final 4 seasons). When or if we do see Blue Collar on a region I DVD, you can bet it'll be the no frill variety, and everytime you fire it up you'll have to suffer through the ultra-annoying Universal logo.

I just looked for it on Netflix and no luck there. It is a GREAT movie.

It's so unfair that this movie gets shafted.

R2 DVD is only £5 (about $10) at play.com and delivery to the US is free (I think, not sure).

It's bare bones but the transfer is nice.

It would be nice to get some extras, not sure how much the people involved in this film would be up for getting together in the studio and chatting about it. Even Schrader himself, in Schrader on Schrader he talks about Pryor calling him a pussy cos he started crying.

I wouldn't throw away $8 bills for a worthless crappy looking bootleg. Buy it off of a third party dealer at Amazon.

It's on the Watch Instantly option on Netflix now. It looks great. What a great movie to revisit after years of my crappy VHS boot.

So what blue collar hero out there will capture the netflix stream and offer the video to a bittorrent site? (or better yet a rip of the original DVD)

For the desperate, a low-res video is available at

Amazon.com is now selling an exclusive DVD of the film.

I just watched this today. Of course I purchased Blue Collar in 2003. It has a good commentary by the director, but there is little else besides that. I did not know this was so difficult to get a hold of these days.

The good thing about a possible re-release on dvd is that it hopefully will attract a new audience. The movie deserves it. I'll bet fans of The Wire will love this film. It's quite weird actually, it came out in 1978 and the movie is still relevant. It looks and sounds fresh and not a tad outdated, like many other movies from the 70's, who were far more succsessful at the box-office and at the award tours. This movie will definitely hold up through time.

I think Richard Pryors peformance was simply brilliant, so was Keitel and Kotto. Pryor did the best performance of his career, no doubt. He got snubbed by the Academy, but I think, why the hell does it matter? The Academy has snubbed too many good peformances over the years anyway, including Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange and Robert Shaw in Jaws, both from the 70's.

We want a new release of this gem!

There's an HD 1.85:1 version on instant Netflix that looks terrific.

The HD version on Netflix is very fine and a highly recommended watch if you enjoy
Blue Collar.

A PAL Region 2 DVD made by Universal UK is readily available for a low price. Amazon.co.uk or eBay (sellers shipping from the UK). I see it on eBay NEW for $12-14 (that price INCLUDES the cost of international shipping).

It looks like a proper DVD, not a DVD-R ... somehow I doubt Universal would be foisting their DVD-Rs on Europe (the so-called Universal "Vault Series" here in the USA which goes for a ridiculous (for a DVD-R) $20 on Amazon.com). I don't know what bonus features (or commentary) it has, if any... would be nice if it contained some of the stuff from the Anchor Bay release (which you can't find anywhere).

I'm getting it - I'll make sure if it's a real DVD or not and what bonus material is has and re-post here.

Blue Collar is in desperate need of a re-release. It would be a perfect candidate for a Criterion edition.

reply

I am totally on board with this sentiment. I own the DVD Anchor Bay released in 2000, but I'd pay $50 for a good blu-ray re-master, even without extras.

Just the fact that it was Richard Pryor's finest moment on film -- not to mention excellent performances by Keitel and Kotto -- is enough to warrant a high-end re-release.

reply

Or maybe, Shout Factory could issue it on blu-ray. Don't ya think?

It's never there when I need it, always when I don't.

reply

Absolutely, Shout! Factory would also be an ideal company to release Blue Collar.
