A Blast From the Past

I remember catching this film as a kid on HBO many years ago and found it very frightening. Mostly because of the violence and a couple of real nasty characters...especially Chico played by Don Granberry. I was shocked to find Blackout on DVD and re-visited it nearly 30 years later. The pacing is pretty tight and the film moves well with some decent performances from James Mitchum and Robert Carradine. There are some great looting scenes and a nice, opening cityscape pan which gives a good aerial view of NY in the late 70's, though most of the film was actually shot (and financed) in Canada. There is a scene near the end of the film which is either an homage or a total ripoff of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. The film is still very violent, even by today's standards. The biggest fault with this movie however is the crass handling of an assault scene and it's aftermath which exhibits a complete and utter lack of empathy. Apart from that, a decent nostalgia trip.

Agreed. It's a very tense, gripping, and effective little thriller. 8 out of 10 from me.
