A Fine Cast

does not a good film make. Even though this is much closer to the book than the original Bogart version, it certainly is nowhere near as good. Candy Clarke was appaling and Sylvia Miles didn't add much either. The men were ok and Mitchum is a fine Marlowe, but not very exciting here. Making it a modern story was ok, but shipping it off to England did nothing for it. For the most part, it was very lacklustre, but that is definitely the director's fault. A rather drab and lifeless production.

Truth is stranger than fiction, but fiction must make sense.
