Different/Alternate Ending??

I've been in love with this movie since I was about eleven or twelve and saw it on TV, either 1978 or 1979. It took me a long time to figure out the name of the movie and try tracking it down on home video, and my first copy was actually a PAL format tape from Greece. It was only when obtaining a copy of the even more rare North American VHS that I realized the endings are slightly different and just confirmed it by watching the Dark Sky DVD. There are two alternate endings for the movie.

The standard one is on the DVD, which ends with a freeze-frame of Mike and the Sheriff being blown away by the goon squad with the credits rolling.

The alternate ending is found on the North American tape which shows the same freeze frame but is followed by a scrolling news story text relating an outbreak of killer barracuda attacks attributed to a freak weather event, ending with an "And in other news ..." bit, followed by the credits.

So far I have only seen it on the Greek tape and am wondering if anybody knows anything more about this? Is that a TV version? Wayne?? :D
