DVD Release?

Has anyone a line on when this movie will be coming out on DVD? American Hot Wax is an AWESOME movie and deserves to be on DVD. Does anyone have any information on this, or maybe why it is being held up???

reply

No info on DVD date, sorry, but just wanted to say that this is one of my absolute favourite movies of all time, and I came across it purely by accident one night just switching channels. I wonder how to plead for a DVD release?

reply

I have a feeling this is one of those movies (like Heavy Metal) where the costs of licensing the music makes it prohibitive to release on DVD. That would really stink, it's a really great film...I was born in the 70s, so it's not even my era, but it surely made me appreciate the era a lot more. Tim McIntire as Alan Freed is an unstoppable force, almost makes me wonder why he never went on to bigger things.

reply

I agree McIntire's performance is fantastic, a little haunting.

I too caught this flick by mistake on TV and it has always stayed with me. I hope it is released on DVD.

If you happen to find it on cable, check it out, it really works.

reply

HEY!! It's being Released on DVD apparently! It comes out DEC.31/1969???? I swear to god. It's on Amazon. I would assume that's some kind of mistake! ( Obviously...)

That's funny. I did have a good laugh when I saw that. Later,

I'll bet a guy with an IQ of less than his shoe size didn't fall for that one either.

reply

wow I guess this is how cult followings get started I to saw this on cable years ago and have seen it every now and again and was lucky enough to tape it in its entirety because i saw it coming up in the tv guide..........any one who loves music I mean really loves music will like this movie this is one of the best rock and roll movies of all time....I would definitly buy if and when it is released

reply

Yes, that's it exactly.

The movie has a tremendous number of different songs in it -- not only the ones that we see the bands perform during the final concert, but also bits of songs played on the radio in the background, and tunes that the street musicians sing little snippets of -- that, collectively, licensing all of them for SALE on a DVD would be prohibitively expensive for a film that isn't a big hit.

reply

If the songs are owned by the same company these days the licensing wouldnt be that expensive...those companies do want to make money too. The movie got VHS release and really does need to be put onto DVD. I have seen two different edits of the film on tv and it would be nice to get one long unedited version combining the scenes from both edits, onto one dvd. As a guy who is 21 years old as of this writing, this was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I would really love for it to be out on dvd.

reply

I agree. I have seen at least two tv edits. Surprisingly, I never even saw the VHS release or I would have bought it. Have you any update on a DVD release date? This film captures the eclectic feeling of what it must have been like to be a small part of the birth of American Rock and Roll popularity. To this regard it is of more than simple entertainment value. It is historic and educational (although not entirely factual) as well.

reply

Check out http://www.planotones.com/

Kenny Vance played the leader of the Planotones and was the musical director the film. He's offering a DVD for sale for $22 from his website.

You would think someone would realize the potential of this movie in
a DVD in its entirety, would have tremendous sales potential with all
of the Doo Wop and Oldies folks out there, I being one of them. I also
was very lucky some years back to catch this flick on TV and have always
wanted to have it for my movie or music collection. The best part of the
movie for me was when the groups were warming up getting ready for their
audition or to go on stage, don't remember which with some of the singers
shown. All I know is the music was damn good despite the story line not
being very interesting, but I kept watching for more of that Doo Wop sound!

reply

I have it on dvd. I bought it off some man in america from ebay. it doesn't have features or anything - actually it jsut looks like it has been shoved onto a cd from the tv. not bad quality!

reply

I did what most any movie collector does. Taped it from cable (Philadelphia's defunct station Prism) and transfer to dvd.

As noted, prohibitive music licensing fees will keep it from a DVD release for the foreseeable future.

HDNet Movies has shown it a couple of times in full widescreen 16:9 HD.

One of the "internet DVD companies" copied it off HDNM and is selling the widescreen version on DVD. You can see the HDNet Movies Logo briefly in the lower right corner in an early scene of the movie.

Check out www.sell.com if you can't find it there, let me know.

Note my separate board comment about a source for the DVD version from the HDNet Movies airing from 2005...

The Dec 4 USA today lists this movie as being among the top ten Hollywood movies that needs to be released on DVD right now. It mentions that there might be a problem with musical rights because of the performances of Chuck Berry, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and the others. Hopefully this publicity will push the studio to release it in the near future.

I only saw this movie in a theater back when it came out 30 years ago and I have never forgotten it. Periodically I have looked for it on DVD without luck. I guess I should check the TV listings, but I don't look at them very often.

I have LOVED this movie ever since I saw it at the drive-in theater! And I have wanted a copy of this movie ever since! I feel I have a GREAT idea to get our beloved movie put on DVD and with all the bells and wissels we want!
Jay Leno who is hilarious in this movie, Is Now, RICH, RICH, RICH and FAMOUS! So this Idea/Project I have is going to have to be done by one/many REAL Fans of this movie and/or lovers of the art of movies and restoring them. Here Goes: The Project's going to require someone who's organized and can make web-sites.
In this web-site, it should have some kind of a "Petition" for us
die hards to come on to the site and add out names. And who ever makes the web-site have it include a sypnopsis of the movie so newbies can come aboard too that want to see the movie come to life on a DVD. Hey, maybe that could be the header or slogan,"Help Make The Movie 'American Hot Wax' Come to Life!". And you know with all the net-connect sites like: MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, IM, Google, Netflix-groups, etc... I think we could garner a lot of attention! Ok, so after the we've got a bazillion names/signatures, someone gets to present it to JAY LENO on his show, asking JAY, TO PLEASE RELEASE 'AMERICAN HOT WAX' ON DVD!!! Once he agrees, then someone in our group can be privledged to tell JAY the Specifics we want when his PRODUCTION COMPANY MAKES THE DVD, i.e. REMASTERED, A Menu, CC-included; would Jays Production Co. pay some videographers to do some featurettes? i.e. "Where are they NOW?"? and interview
some of the actors/singers from the movie. And another with, someone interviewing Jay himself!-Ask him, "What was it like making the movie and what was his life experiences around that time he's making the movie?"
(I'm gonna stop here for now, b/c my cable connection is shutting down for maintenance...go figure!.), thanks for listening! Looking forward to your ideas and input!.... Margaret (10-15-08) (sorry for any typos!)

Check out www.thevideobeat.com -- search for this film under "Rock and Roll Movies." They tend to be a little expensive, but this film is worth the expense.

reply

lo and behold, its up on youtube! sweet!!

reply

Check out www.thevideobeat.com for a good (if somewhat expensive) DVD.

We really need a DVD of this film. Chuck Berry's presence alone may keep it from being legally released. Other films not on DVD that have Chuck Berry songs include UNHOLY ROLLERS (original rock and roll soundtrack) and the documentary LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL.
