Would you need to know the Beatles stories to get the references and therefor the laughs, or would it equally be funny to anyone interested in pop music?
Also, would you need to know who Jagger and Paul Simon are?
Or is this just as much a send up of documentaries? As there are lots of visual & verbal gags about documentaries.
I once saw a Beatles documentary that looked just like a serious version of the Ruttles. Like most things, you don't need to know the source material, but it helps.

Ha ha, it was a serious version of the Ruttles. But which one was, either intentionally or unintentionally, funnier?
