Cut scene on DVD?

I'm sure that when I first saw this film on TV, Dan Akroyds character, the guy that turned down the Rutles, left the room and shot himself. Am I imagining this?

reply

No, you are not imagining it. When this programme was first shown on US TV, this scene had to have its ending changed because censors, or someone, objected to the scene ending with the interviewer asking Ackroyd "What's it like to be such an a-hole?". But apparently it is OK to promote suicide :-)

In the UK we had the original version from the outset.

reply

Thanks! I wonder why it was not restored for the DVD release?

reply

I pretty sure it's included on my VHS copy because I remember that bit, but never saw it on TV (until we stumbled upon last night on VH1 :-). But it's definitely not on my DVD version.

Maybe they thought better of it later because of John's murder by gun...? Though the VHS version came out after that, too.

This is on the DVD, an easter egg reachable from #12 on the chapter menu (right, down, enter).

reply

On the menu for chapters 7-12, there's a top-caption above the six chapters that reads "Let It Rot". Selecting this goes to the alternate, US-broadcast Dan Aykroyd scene. No "a-hole", but among the several terms Idle uses to describe Thigh is "twat" (rhyming with "cat", not "squat").
