NBA players mentioned on show

a bunch of old players mentioned...sometimes it was funny how they referenced them

Goldstein, as a turning-pro Cool walks in the locker room: "Well, well...if it isnt the young Willis Reed!"

Cool, to the kid on the plane: "that's right kid, im kareem abdul-jabbar, and over there (pointing at coach) is jerry west"

willis and coach in the car b/f reeves comeback:
COACH: 'well i'm no Dr J..."
WILLIS: '--Dr J?!?! Hell you're not even Kenny Reeves anymore!'

reply

Corrections: Cool said to the kid on the plane, "I'm Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and that's (pointing to C.J.) Jamaal Wilkes." Kid looks at Reeves and asks Cool, "is that Jerry West?" Cool says, "in the flesh."

In the exchange between Reeves and Willis about his "comeback", both actually said Doc's full name...

Other NBA mentions:

"Bonus Baby"- Preston's lady says she knows Earl Monroe, tells owner of semi-pro team that Cool is another Dr. J, and Jackie Solomon says Preston convinced him he was a young Al Attles.

"Just One of the Boys" - Reeves tells Collins' former coach that Thorpe is as good a defensive player as Dean Meminger.

"Wanna Bet" - Bobby Magum tells Reeves "Rick Barry lived off you, man"

Forget the episode, maybe "The Offer" - Reeves is listening to the Bulls on the radio and Artis Gilmore is giving an interview to Chick Hearn. Question is asked about who the Bulls need to win, Hearn says, "Like Tom Boerwinkle and Kenny Reeves?" Artis retorts, "No, more like Bob Love and Chet Walker."

Chet the Jet actually appeared in Season 3's "If Your Number's Up, Get it Down" along with Elgin Baylor and Red Auerbach.

"Here's Mud in Your Eye" - CJ asks Dr. Crawford, "you know how much Tiny Archibald makes?"

In "Number's Up", Reeves is trying to get support for a mobile health care unit and calls Red Auerbach and mentions that John Havlicek once scored 46 points off him. He also tried to call Calvin Murphy.

"Vanity Fare" - Robbie Maine mentions that Dave DeBusschre once scored 20 points in one quarter off Reeves.

"Christmas Story" - Father Phil reminds Reeves that Bill Bradley gave him trouble.

I'm sure there's ones I missed...

Also in "Airball" (S1E9):

Man (seeking Coach Reeve's autograph): "Excuse me..."
Coach: "Yeah?"
Man: "I was talking to one of your players back there and they told me who you were and, ah, I wonder if I could have your autograph?"
Coach: "(sigh) I can't do that, I'd be embarrassed. Uh, I don't play pro ball anymore."
Man: "I really appreciate it if you would; it's, it's really not for me, it's for my kid."
Coach: "(sigh) Well, what's your kid's name?"
Man: "Chris."
[Coach signs his autograph.]
Man: "I really appreciate this. I don't follow basketball myself, but... I know you!"
Coach: "Thank-you. That's very nice."
Man (looking at autograph): "I'm a little confused, this is... Kenny Reeves."
Coach: "Yeah, that's me."
Man: "He told me you were Bob Cousy."
[Team starts laughing.]

According to Wikipedia: "In his first 11 seasons in the NBA, Cousy led the league in assists eight straight times and introduced a new blend of ball-handling and passing skills that earned him the nicknames 'Cooz,' 'The Houdini of the Hardwood,' and--—as he was regularly introduced at Boston Garden---'Mr. Basketball.'"
