DeVito's "Louie DePalma" universally hated?

Just read bio of Danny DeVito and it mentions that his Louie DePalma character on the TV show Taxi was "universally hated." I'd like to go on record as saying that I loved the DePalma character, it made the show for me. I thought he was hilarious.

Louie like J.R. Ewing is loved to be hated.

reply

Agreed. The character you love to hate. People watch taxi just to see Louie get his comeuppance.

reply

I don't hate him, he was never as bad as most People seem to remember. There were plenty of Episode where he showed he had a heart (for instance the ones with his mother).

The greatest Louie moment was when Elaine got a terrible hairdo from a snotty hairdresser (played by Ted Danson) and after the hairdresser rebuffs and insults her further, she considers dumping chemicals on his head. She stops, stating she's better than that.

...

Louie immediately goes and dumps the chemicals on the guy's head, reasoning "She might be better than you, but I ain't!"

I thought Louie was regarded as the best character of the series?

reply

Maybe he meant the character of Louie was hated by the other characters on the show? It can't be that the Louie was hated by viewers- he was the funniest along with Rev Jim

I always thought the Louie DePalma character represented the small part in all of us that wants to be brutally honest, a little shady at times, and mean to others when things don't go our way. Of course most of us let common sense override these feelings and never act on them. Louie always acted on them. I loved the character! My favorite episode was when he met his girlfriend Zena's parents and her mother told him if he ever thought about marrying her daughter she'd have him killed.

My pick is when Louie gets sued by the old lady con artist who was really hurt and Louie pushes her wheelchair through the exit and fell down a flight of stairs and he's yelling Get Up Edith!!!

Louie was not charming. You hated him one minute only to like him again the next. Over all I think he's more likeable. I've seen some characters where you either like or loath them. Nothing ruins a show like a main character you loath permanently. That is not a good idea to write characters like this. I'll walk away and go watch something else.

True that is...
I could tolerate Frank Burns but stopped watching MASH because of Charles Winchester.

For me it was Buffy. She was likeable in the first three seasons. From season four to seven. She became a two-faced whiny little hypocrite. So off putting.

The character was great, but the character was for the most part a bad person. There are a few times that you show he can do good and be nice, but in his own way.

I just love the moment when they all go to an art auction and want to sit in like the first or second row but all the seats are taken.
So Louie walks over there and starts coughing and hacking and everyone gets up and leaves and the crew gets their seats!

Let me know if I'm on your ignore list.
Thanx!

I just watched that episode last night on youtube. I didn't remember it from its original airing. So funny! Louie had his money tied up in a nursing home investment. He wasn't getting a return because they were wasting money by feeding those old people "too much."

If Louie was a cartoon character, he'd be Daffy Duck. As Daffy said about himself, "I'm a greedy slob." lol

Louie touches the inner meanie in all of us. No matter how nice and decent a person is, there IS that fantasy of saying and doing exactly what he pleases, consequences be darned!

It was interesting how Louie always called the gang from the garage a bunch of "losers", yet he always found a way to hang out with them. He seemed to hold them in contempt but always sought out Alex's advice.

reply

Are you kidding? Louie was hands down my favorite character

reply

I'm sure we've all had to deal with a Louie DePalma-style boss.
