the novel

REBEL WITH A CAUSE If you are a huge fan of the novel, then this 1979 series is more close to the book than the 1940 film is.The second mrs.de winter is played by joanna david who in my opinion is what i imagine her to look and act like.Mrs danvers is chillingly played by anna massey who has the book character down to a tee.i was a bit disappointed in how much they left out in the hitchcock film so this serial makes up for it.

I couldn't agree more, angelfox.
I hope it is released on DVD someday - I'd buy it in heartbeat.
I was disappointed in the 1940 movie by the plot change that allowed Sir Olivier to be less of a villain!

REBEL WITH A CAUSE yes and have you seen the version with charls dance as maxim? That is even worse!Maxim tried to rescue mrs.danvers from burning manderlay at the end!

Well thanks to the Hayes Act of the time, husbands were not allowed to murder their wives in movies. Hitchcock just had his hands tied because of a decency law.

Alas, I only caught part of this version of Rebecca on TV back when it originally aired, but would love to view the entire series properly and own a copy.

The novel is one of my favourites and although I enjoyed the 1940 Hitchcock classic, there were a number of alterations and omissions that bothered me. This longer serial version allows a closer and more detailed following of the book. The Hayes Code back in the 40's prevented having a murderer cast in a sympathetic light, so Hitchcock was forced to alter the tale. However, I also had other issues with his classic version.

From what I recall, Joanna David is perfect as the second Mrs. de Winter in this series. Joan Fontaine in the 1940 film is endearingly shy but far too pretty for the role, IMHO. When I imagine Mrs. de Winter, I picture Joanna David! Build, hairstyle, overall appearance, demeanour -- all perfect!

I believe Emilia Fox, who portrayed Mrs. de Winter in the 1997 version, is Joanna David's daughter. I wouldn't recommend that version as Rebecca is shown in flashback, completely ruining her air of mystery from the novel.
