Desperately seeking 1979 version of Rebecca

It seems as if the BBC is not interested in releasing this excellent adaptation of Du Maurier's masterpiece. It defies belief really as they are more than happy to release a lot of junk instead. I don't know if anyone has seen the 90s remake which does not even come close. Million dollar question - how do you get your hands on the 1979 version? If anyone has any idea please put us fans out of our misery. Living in hope......

reply

We agree with you 100%. We'd love a Region 1 DVD of this, the BEST version of Rebecca, bar none.

reply

Yes, I agree 100%. This is an exqusite version of Rebecca. I am desperately looking for it too. I hope there is something that could be done. I can believe they rather publish the 1997 version, which is not even close to the statute of the 1979 version.

reply

If there are so many of us who want to own this version, I certainly hope that it will be released on DVD. If I recall correctly, it was first shown on PBS. This is a must to have for any serious collector of DuMaurier. If anyone has received an answer to the question--please let me know. I would love to have a copy.

reply

As far as I know there is no intention to release this film on DVD. However there are copies made from television. The quality is like a faint VHS version.

reply

I couldn't agree more! This 1979 version even tops Hitchcock movie with Laurence Olivier. I've been looking for a copy (VHS or DVD now) for years now but it seems very difficult (not to say impossible) to find. And that is really too bad.

reply

Can't believe so many people are like me looking for this TV version. To me, the characters are more true to the book than in any other version. I also liked the music - I remember Debussy's 'Reverie' was very apt. I may be mistaken, but I believe I saw a VHS version of this in my local woolworth's, but it's a few years ago. If I'm right, I only wish I'd bought it but I didn't have a player at the time.

reply

Not "Rêverie", Susan, but "Des pas sur la neige", (it means something like "Footprints on snow") by Claude Debussy and you are right, it was very apt…even spooky !

reply

I also remember Debussy's "Gardens in the Rain", also very evocative. I think it was when Maxim and the Wife were walking through Happy Valley after Beatrice and Giles' visit. I love this version and can't think why it's not available, unless it does have something to do with copyrights of all the Debussy pieces.

reply

I can remember this TV-serie and we had a copy on Betamax, but unfortunatly recorded over part one by a mistake. I would love to have a copy on VHS or even better DVD. Maybe if we all wrote to the BBC they would consider a release?

reply

To all those seeking a DVD version, I just
purchased one from Roberts in Canada, but at
an elevated price, although two parts to each
disc. Have gone through parts one & two and
it is a gem. Jeremy Brett...what a loss...he
was a consumate actor.

Is that this one? http://www.robertsvideos.com/product.php3?invid=65988&ref=/browse.php3

I wanted to ask here whether anyone knew of the above and whether it was of reasonable quality. I have had email correspondence with the BBC who have said they have no plans to release this (other people here have received the same) and the Brettish Empire website says there is a copyright issue. Anyone know anything about Roberts Videos?

have a look at ebay!

Thanks a million, I found my copy AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I am so happy. I found it at robertsvideos.com. I can't wait to its arrival. I watched it in Cuba when I was a teenager, I have been looking for it since more than 10 years ago.

God bless everybody for all your recommendations. I am so glad I posted my message on January 22, 2006.

Thanks.

Has anyone any new information regarding the acquisition of this wonderful production on DVD, even if bootlegged? Do post something if you can offer any leads for those of us who are interested. Thanks very much.

reply

a two disc dvd-r is available at www.robertsvidoes.com. it is like a slightly faded vhs, but obviously worth it!

This is rather a late reply and I do not have any information as such but I have visited this site before looking, just as you and others have done for the 1979 version of Rebecca.

Did you or anyone see the Rick Stein "Du Maurier's Cornwall" over this last weekend. It showed as you will have seen if you did, scenes from the 1979 Rebecca so it MUST be somewhere to be seen and released. I am going to write to the film company because like you all I just must have a copy. It was by far the best. The Laurence Oliver/Joan Fontaine was lovely but limited and the recent version starring Joanna David's daughter was entirely wrong. She played her MUCH too "knowing", but the 1979 was just perfect.

If I have any lucky I'll post a comment and then we can all be happy!

reply

There are copies around. It is a shame that we are forced to consider bootlegs but there you go. I've been searching for twenty-odd years and in the absence of the BBC even considering re-release (and they should be ashamed of themselves, IMO), there has to be another possibility if I am going to see this version of Rebecca. It is not what I would choose but unless they repeat or release on DVD the BBC are really shortchanging audiences of period drama in holding this series effectively to ransom. But a poor quality copy is better than nothing ...

Email [email protected] for info on getting Rebecca on DVD

reply

I was investigating this for years and was told it is a closed issue as there is a copyright problem with the original production from the BBC.

I did see one on EBAY and that was a VHS copy.

Were you ever able to locate a copy of this? I, too, am looking.

I got a copy from a man in Germany. Check on e-bay because that is where I made contact with him. The copy including shipping was about $30.00.

I just ordered a copy from Robert's Hard to Find Videos in Canada. I've been thinking about it for awhile and figured it's the only way I'm ever going to get to see this version. I'm crossing my fingers that it's in good condition. It was $35, free shipping.

I'll let you know!

Thanks for the info but I was actually able to find two copies and bought both just in case one wasn't good. Both were of equally good quality. I'm interested, though, in the place you mentioned... Robert's Hard to Find Videos. I've never heard of this place. Can I find them on the internet?

www.robertsvideos.com

It was mentioned on this board a few times. Where did you get your other copy?

I just watched the 1997 version last night and really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see the 1979!

I thought I'd kept the guy's address but can't find it. The first copy came from a man in Germany who had posted it on e-bay. I contacted him and he said he had a friend in the states who would make a copy that would work on our system. Someone else contacted me ( through IMDB) and I ordered from him, too, because I was a little worried about the first copy and I really wanted it!
The copies are identical in quality. It makes me think that the second guy may have been the German's friend in the U.S.
Thanks for sending the address for Robertsvideo. I've already checked it out and saw at least one movie that I want.
