Hitchcock's Version or This Version?

So, which version is the best version?

1. Joan Fontaine wins hands down as the second Mrs. de Winter. She is the right age and a better actress. The role doesn't call for great beauty so I can't count her beauty as a plus.

2. Laurence Olivier was better as Max de Winter although Jeremy Brett was very good also. Olivier was one of the all time greats and was nominated for eight Oscars.

3. Judith Anderson had the icy stare down pat. She was fantastic with her "Why don't you?" and "Go ahead."

4. Jack Favell was "slimy" and nobody can do "slimy" better than George Sanders.

5. The 1979 version ran almost four hours and had extra footage that was very much appreciated.

My conclusion is that the 1940 version was better. It's an all time classic and all time classics are very hard to beat. One wouldn't remake "Gone With the Wind," would they?
