The (UK) BBC DVD

Does anyone know if the BBC DVD of this has been censored. I see they have it classed as a "15" rating.

I'm hopeing not as that would spoil a great deal of enjoyement for me, not to mention cutting the scene with the lipstick! Somehow I just can't imagine the BBC censoring Potter's work, that would be outrageous.

I saw this back in 1978 and loved it then, now I'd like to get the DVD (censored or not).

Thanks
Les

Got it. Not censored :)

the disc with the lipstick sequence is actually rated as 12.

I'm a bit over halfway through the series and the only censoring is that they've silenced out when Arthur says the f-word in the lipstick scene... but other than that it seems fully intact.

reply

That was silenced out in the original broadcast. So, the DVD gives us the TV series as it was originally broadcast. Speaking for myself, I would have preferred it if it wasn't silenced out. That would be truer to Dennis Potter's vision.

It's a BBC production from the 1970s. Frankly I'd be amazed if a copy with the word intact still exists, assuming one ever existed. (It's possible that the sound was blanked out at that instant as it was being recorded.)

reply

I would imagine that it was silenced from the start.

I'm not too sure if the DVDs have been censored. The BBC/BFI DVD that I own has been passed for 12 year olds. But I wouldn't be surprised if that has been changed since this DVD issue was available. A '15' rating would have been more sensible for the DVD issue that I have. The content is very borderline for Normal '12' certificate. Parents take caution.

I doubt a lot of parents will show this to the kids unless there was a cartoon rabbit involved.

It's that man again!!
