Pretty lame

Where to begin?

Robert Wagner turns down Angie Dickenson for Lesley Ann Warren, and the character Warren plays is essentially a mental case. Despite her suicidal behavior and other kookiness Wagner tells her he loves her after only a couple of days.

Angie (the Colonel's wife) is supposed to be best friends with a whorehouse madam?

The gay Private doesn't want any hookers but he jumps Angie Dickenson's bones? Well, OK maybe that one could happen.

Dennis Weaver is little more than a cartoon cut-out of a real Army Colonel.

Without the footage from Tora Tora Tora this movie wouldn't rise to the level of a crummy soap opera.

"crummy soap opera" might be better than the show!

Still I've seen a LOT worse on TV and better ("V" anyone?!). :-)

Clearly I didn't remember the gay Private storyline and when it was re-aired, it seems this stuff was edited for time (along with Audra Lindley, who I guess was considered irrelevant to moving the plot along).

but the last time I saw this, I was definitely WTF with Angie Dickenson BFF with Katherine Helmond, the island madam. That was just too ridiculous.

I think I always enjoyed Dennehy, Gail, Arkin, then rounded out nicely with Weaver and Wagner.

This was really one of my favorite soldier movies with those guys. Maybe I'll see something different in watching it now and paying attention to it and it won't be as good, but I always got a kick out of Arkin being shot at while out there marching.

It was pretty ordinary, the characters had no depth.
Also what was up with the man translating the Japanese Naval parts? It sounded like he had no script, like he was just reading out what he heard in a stilted voice like something you hear live when the UN is on TV.
