I Was the Composer for the CBS Series and the Years on Showtime

My name is Stephen Seretan. I knew John Houseman for the entire run. In fact, after the CBS series, he asked me to return to write music for the revived series on Showtime. He was a very nice man and a great help to my career. I miss him. We were both of Romanian descent, as my grandparents were. Good friend. Everyone should call or email AMC and other cable production companies about reviving it. AMC loved the original series. He told my friend pitching a series, "This is the kind of show we want", holding up a DVD of Paper Chase. I am trying to get it done myself now.

BTW, I think Edward Herrmann is a natural choice for Prof. Kingsfield. Agree?
Thanks for keeping this alive! The show was so cool to work on. .

Well done! The Paper Chase is a welcome change from the noise placed on so many temporary TV shows and movies by tin-eared writers and producers.

Hermann is a very good actor, but I just can't imagine anyone replacing Houseman. I also really like Jeremy Kemp, but he hasn't acted in a long time.

Thanks so much for that nice message. I really love hearing from people who enjoy it. It means a lot to me. I loved working on the show.

No one will ever replace John. He was an original. We are planning to put together a sequel to the series, and AMC has shown some interest. If you want to support it, let AMC know your feelings. They do care. I think the public would love to see it again. It was the "Mad Men" of its day.

Thanks again.

I also created a Paper Chase plot/subplot guide on this board. Maybe it would remind you of the good old days.

I don't know if this is still being considered by AMC but man, that is a great idea. If only Houseman were still alive. Maybe some British actor like Ian Mckellan or Patrick Stewart (can you tell I just saw an X-Men movie)?

Edward Hermann is good but ... too nice...

Thank you for writing, Mr. Seretan. It's rare for an "insider" to offer insight into a show on the IMDB boards. I only saw the CBS show and did not have cable at the time. I am a great fan of the feature film. It has a very different "tone," close to anti-establishment, than the series with John Houseman's brilliance being the unifying force linking the movie and the series. He is a joy to watch even when he was cutting a student into pieces. The series is also a more of an ensemble piece than the film which essentially pitted Hart against Kingsfield. At first, I felt that James Stephens' early performances depicted him as a slow-witted blockhead, especially in the pilot. But he brought more nuance to the character as the series moved on. I think Herrmann would be a good choice and so would Ben Kingsley, who is able to unleash a frightening, controlled anger.

reply

First of all, Stephen, thanks for your contribution to the series. Your classical touch fit--if not partly established--the mood of the show.

Second, I hesitate to share this (would they use a good idea if it can be traced back to a post on imdb?) but here's an idea I've had for a few years. Instead of remaking the show, what I'd like to see is a new show in which James Hart, played by James Stephens, returns to Harvard to take the post previously held by Kingsfield (or, alternatively, accepting a newly-established Charles Kingsfield chair). He's a very successful lawyer (as you'd have to be to be considered for this post), but he has never taught before. Should he be as ruthless as Kingsfield was? Should he shroud a student on the first day? Should he be his own good-natured self, or has that been lost in decades of law practice? How has law changed since he was an L1? Are ethics less important now? Can he change that? How has Harvard changed? How has education and what students expect from it?

If anyone who has the power to produce this reads this post, go ahead and use it; just send me the blu-rays free of charge and don't make it just another soap opera.

Hi Stephen !!
It is a pleasure to hear from somebody connected with this wonderful gem of a series !! Your music really set the tone for the show !!!
On the subject of JOHN HOUSEMAN , I have researched him for sometime, as I find him to be a fascinating individual. And that he was !! I learned that he was involved with the writing of CITIZEN KANE !! That he taught at JULLIARD , and that 2 of his students were named CHRISTOPHER REEVE and ROBIN WILLIAMS !!! Thought not known for his humour , I have seen him in some series being delightfully funny !! . I think he was a fantastic actor, who played KINGSFEILD, so well that I can't imagine anyone else playing him !

I discovered THE PAPER CHASE for the first time on PBS. the episode - ONCE MORE WITH FEELING . by the end of the episide , I was wanting to see every episode I could !!!! The new seasons, I'm sorry to say , DIDNT Live up to that first season.
Gone were Logan ,and Anderson, they turned Ford into a bit of a ladies man ( that have been the anderson character , in season 1)
Simply put - the chemistry wasn't there, as it had been the first year.

For a while, to my delight, BOOK TV was running the entire series !! But it was replaced by another series. I do hope people who have not seen it in a long time, find it again , it's such a ground breaking , well written , acted series!!!

As for who could play KINGSFEILD, if the series was redone ?!? As I've said - only the great John houseman to me . But a decent choice , I believe could be Patrick Stewart . Sadly, I just learned this morning that EDWARD HERMANN passed away at the age of 70.

Something I only learned a few years ago , was that actor Robert Ginty , who played Anderson , and actress Francine Tacker , were married for at one point, and have a son who is now an actor as well ! .

Hi Wendy,

How sweet of you to leave such a nice comment about my music for the show. I am so glad you enjoyed the series and found the music (MX) added to the experience for you. Composers have to stay in the background, so it's nice to hear from an appreciative fan!

John was an amazing talent in so many areas. He DID co-write what is considered the greatest American film of all time, Citizen Kane. And also taught those 2 huge stars. He told Robin to quit acting and do stand up. True. Saved his career, and later he also became a fine actor. John had a brilliant comedic talent as well. He was a wryly funny man.

I agree that there is only ONE Kingsfield. He owned it. However, I agree that Patrick Stewart would work well. There is another British actor who would be good too, but his name escapes me at the moment. Let's hope they see fit to reprise it. I would love to be part of it again. It was an amazing ride to work on that show with John et al. I have a gut feeling it just might return. I did not know it was on Book TV, and I never even heard of that channel.

Thank you again for your taking the time to post. I love to hear from Paper Chase fans. It made my New Year's Day!

Hi again, Steve !!
Perhaps your thinking of Ian mckellan ??? He would be OUTSTANDING as KINGSFEILD!! Only performers of that stature could do that role. The problem is John houseman raised the bar so high in his performance , that only the best actors need apply !!!
What was the rest of the cast like? I'm thought james Stephens was great as HART! As for robert Ginty , I had never heard a new york accent until I saw / heard him in the paper chase !! Lol what projects are you involved with now ?? Take care !!

reply

He would be great, but perhaps too high priced now that he is big in features. Probably wouldn't want to do a series. I was thinking of another one. All of the cast were very nice people. Very supportive of my work.

I am now going to score a film about a champion boxer who had a rough childhood getting to the top.
His father molested him, and he had to fight his way up. I know him well. Great story called Out On My Feet. I will do the music for a reality series too soon. Both are still being sold.

Hold a good thought for the return of Paper Chase. Who knows? Might happen. Anything is possible!

I hope this project comes to fruition. If AMC or another widely available channel were to broadcast the series again, I have no doubt that there would be enough of a demand to get the new project rolling.

I have been holding off watching again, as it looks like no one has released anything beyond season 2, as a self professed binge watcher, I don't like the idea of being left hanging.

Great work on the score, I can only imagine the challenge of scoring something where the music has to compliment the series and set the mood but not be overtly noticeable or overpowering.

Thanks for writing. I agree there is an audience for this. AMC loved the show. We just need to get the team together to do it. Launching a series is no easy endeavor. Lots of parts and work in prep.

Film mx is definitely a unique art form. To be there but not too much, except in mx only scenes. I love it though. Thx for the support.

I loved Paper Chase so much that when it returned on Showtime, I immediately ordered cable. Thanks for your involvement.

Thank you. Nice to hear from you from a show so long ago. I loved working on it. John Houseman was a joy. Legend. Seems folks still like it. I love that. FYI, I am trying to get it produced again. AMC loves it and may buy it. We'll see. Stay tuned. LOL. Keep in touch. I'll tell everyone what I am involved with next. Nice to have fans who are interested. Makes my job so much better.

Forgot to throw my personal recommendation for Kingsfield, I can see the great Brian Blessed and his booming voice revive the Kingsfield character in the way it deserves to come back.

The Paper Chase has always been a top ten all time television show for me. Glad to read comments from others who appreciate this little known classic :)

Love your music from the series. I have been a fan of the series since its run on CBS and got the Showtime cable station JUST to see The Paper Chase. I recorded all of the unedited episodes on VHS SP mode and purchased the first two seasons as they came out on DVD. I very recently had the opportunity to introduce my girlfriend to the series. We just finished watching the first two seasons and the original movie. Now I have to dig out my VHS tapes to finish showing her the series which she loves. Where are the remaining seasons on DVD?
btw - I think J.K. Simmons would make a good Kingsfield (but John Houseman will always own the role).

Though I watched this show as a kid (I was born in '66) I am re-watching it now. I loved the movie and fortunately found a way to rewatch the series. I am a "classical" musician and love listening to your compositions. Its not often that you hear baroque styled compositions in television. Did you oversee the recording as well?

reply

Thx for your kind comment. Yes, I was responsible for all the recordings on the series. Hard work but very satisfying. It was the 1st time TV in the US had ever had original Baroque music written for a series. I am proud of that. We even used a harpsichord, since the piano was not invented yet! I was holding to the real Baroque period. Real fun. My good friend,Bill Mays played it. He is a great Jazz keyboard artist with a trio that appears all over. Thx again.

Mr. Houseman knew talent when he saw it. Your composition really brought a feel of serious scholarly pursuit to the dramas which were sometimes a little light. All due respect to Seals and Crofts, but that season one theme was poorly chosen, something more suited to the likes of Bridget Loves Bernie, I think. Right off the bat in season two the feeling is much more studious without being ponderous or portentious. Acoustic folk ballads are not the stuff of Ivy League law schools. My mother was a musician and lifelong piano teacher who taught me to appreciate music as the language of the soul and recognize what it can be like to live a life in tune. It brings flavor to every moment, like salt and spice to the meal. It also brings great value. For example, Jerry Goldsmith made Paramount billions because the first Star Trek movie would have been the last Star Trek anything without his glorious compositions saving everything in sight. As a humble viewer, I thank you.

reply

I am watching season two now, having just completed season one again, and yes, the music makes a palpable difference. My disappointment at losing familiar characters was mitigated by the appreciation for other touches, such as the music in this one.

reply

Thank you so much. I really appreciate hearing that.

I want you and all the other kind folks posting here all this time to hear the news first.
I have an active producer pitching AMC on putting the series on again as a NEW show. I have been dreaming of doing this for a long time. I know many of you guys (and girls) have been rooting for this with me. She has a friend who has inside contacts with AMC, so we will get a shot. They have shown interest before. We shall see.

If we get a green light, I will be on the production staff this time, as well as score the music (MX) again. I would never let that go! Too important to me (and you lovely people too).

You can help by calling or writing to AMC to support this. Let's all keep our fingers and toes crossed. Stranger things have happened. I mean it's SHOW BIZ!

If it gets produced, I will keep in touch right here to give you all the news on the show.

Thanks to everyone.

Even after almost 40 years, The Paper Chase remains my favorite TV show -- a show that I thought got better when it moved to cable, because it had more room to be "serious." It's exciting to think AMC might resurrect it in some form. As for who should play Kingsfield, I would throw central casting a curve ball and suggest James Earl Jones. He's got the gravitas and the ability to be a great stone face when needed.
