Remastered DVD sets

Danish distributor Soul Media has re-issued the series as 'Digitally Remastered' season sets of How The West Was Won this year here in Scandinavia. Do note that these are PAL formatted DVDs so not compatible with most players and TV sets in the Americas.

If you are living within the EU you should be able to get these from places like Discshop.se. Others could try gucca.dk (do note that they stock both old and new sets so check the artwork for "Digitally Remastered" before ordering). The title is "Familjen Macahan".

Buyers should be warned, however, that "digitally remastered" is always a relative term.

The image quality of the 14 disc complete set is so-so at best. They look like re-scanned videotape recordings; not awful, but nothing to write home about either.

Yes, I wasn't impressed with them either once I got the complete set. Lesser number of discs due to switching from single layer DVDs (DVD-5) to dual layer discs (DVD-9) and putting more episodes per disc but pq-wise it wasn't an improvement...

It's a Soul Media release, a company that I don't hold in high regard and I try to avoid. Not too many choices around when it comes to this show so it is this or nothing. That said, should they put this out in the US, hopefully re-scanned from the negatives and, dare I hope, given a BD release then I'd likely be first in line.

Amen to that. In any case, it's good to catch up with the show after so long.
