Nobody posting...?

I'm amazed nobody else is posting here. This is probably my favorite anime TV series and possibly the best thing Miyazaki ever worked on. I guess it's just the lack of people who've actually gotten their hands on the fansubs, but still... nobody's posting? Damn, that bothers me.

I'm here!!!

They've just released Conan DVD here in Portugal. Excellent! Too bad it is already sold out, but the guys at the store promised a new shipment was arriving. Maybe now you will get more posts.

I'll finally be able to see all the episodes. When I was a kid I remember missing more than 3 episodes! It was a looooong wait, bit it was worth it ;-)

Cheers,

Im here too.

No releasing here in Canada. I had to buy a bootleg from China to get it. I downloaded the first episode and I knew this series was going to be awesome and I was right after I saw it. This is some of Miyazaki's best work and any fan of his should definetly see it.

Hey I'm here too!!!

I'm a BIG fan of "Future Boy Conan (1978)". IMHO, it's one of the greatest anime TV series I've ever seen... and believe me, I've seen a lot (^_^). I'm also, generally, a BIG fan of Miyazaki and Takahata, and I love all anime from Studio Ghibli. Ever since I was a little kid, my love of anime was bordering on obsession. I've been watching so many anime series and movies and I still remeber and love many of them. As kids living in the Arab countries (I'm from the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia, by the way) in the 1980s, we were very lucky... There was a very serious anime dubbing trend. There were several active and talented groups (from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and all Arab countries of Persian Gulf area working as one group) making excellent dubbings of the best anime from Japan. What so many people don't know, I'm sure, is that the Middle East area has been a large anime market (just like it was in France, Italy, Korea, Hong Kong, and Spain) ever since the early 1980s. There was simply no kid in my area in 1980s who wasn't watching anime and who wasn't a big fan of "Future Boy Conan". It is so popular in Arab countries that it has been screened over and over again on TV and so many households still have the complete episodes on VHS video tapes. Many kids in these areas who were born in the 1970s or later have grown up watching this anime both on TV and video. Although we have enjoyed watching so many other great anime TV series and movies made by such legends as Osamu Tezuka, Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, Mamoru Oshii, Leiji Matsumoto, Isao Takahata,... etc., "Future Boy Conan" for many people here was and maybe still the best Anime TV series ever made. Because of such anime like "Future Boy conan (1978)", "Treasure Island (1978)", "Kimba the White Lion (1965)", "Rose of Versailles (1978), "Grandizer (1975)", "3D Animation: A Child Without a Home (1977)", "Heidi (1974)", "Prince of the Sun: Hols's Great Adventure (1968)", "Plawres Sanshiro (1983)", "Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982)", "Igano Kabamaru (1983)" and so many others, I consider the period between the mid 1960s and the late 1980s to be the golden era of classic Japanese anime...

BTW, it seems that very few people know that Isao Takahata (director of "Grave of the Fireflies") has directed episodes 9 & 10 of "Futur Boy Conan". He has also done storyboards for episodes 7, 9, 10, 13 & 20.

Anyone interested in downloding and watching the entire TV series (subbed in English) can find it here:

The picture quality of the episodes is excellent (Japanese DVD rip). So If you consider yourself a fan of Miyazaki or Takahata (or both) and you still haven't seen this great anime... Well, what're you waiting for? Go get it now!

Fansubs of Future Boy Conan can be found, if you know where to look. The internets really are an amazing thing.

It's surprising that this excellent show is still unknown in America, but I would have to believe that it's only a matter of time before someone with some horse sense gets the US rights.

It's certainly among Miyazaki's most significant works, and I don't think you can really understand his more serious themes without it. And, of course, there are all those countless Conan riffs throughout all the Ghibli films that no one's noticing. Sad.

An amazing anime series, it is in my collection!

It's not just the fansubs, it's also that this series wasn't aired almost anywhere (sadly) and people started to get to know japanese animation through Heidi and Marco (me, at least) and picked it up from there.

Now there is just so much anime coming out getting so much coverage that really fantastic series like this one (also my favorite, with trigun as second) get lost in the hubbub.

Most people (read: not Anime fans) know Miyazaki from his more recent works (actually almost noone I know knew that Heidi was from him) and tend to watch anime as they have it fed to them, which means only seeing the more recent (or most famous, of which this one isn't) releases.

I'm in agreement with everyone who says this is the best thing Miyazaki ever did. It's way more subtle than his current works and it's in that older style of his, reminiscent of Castle Cagliostro and his work on the Lupin III tv series (my real favorite anime of all time).

I was surprised to see it had such a following in the Middle East, apparently it was translated in Arabic and aired on Kuwaiti television? Interesting.

reply

Yeah, near-unknown in English-speaking countries :(. You'd think they'd release it in English now that Ghibli films are selling well (in English, I mean).

reply

It took me awhile to see the series.

I had to downloaded it from the internet, and now have all 26 episodes.

It's very cool for an old school anime.

Has everything you'd expect from THE Hayao Miyazaki.

If it ever gets a Region 1 DVD release I'll be sure to get it.
