Did Willis ever drop his attitude?

If it weren't for Mr. Drummond, they both would have been shuffled around the foster care system, and most likely, separated. Yet Willis always had an attitude towards him.

reply

He was pretty mellow after he smoked weed that one time

reply

look at it from his perspective he was adopted by the guy who his mom had been a paid servant for. Suddenly trying to be an unpaid child who does get to live in the lap of luxury and do nothing probably is awkward.

Yes Mr Drumond did hire white housekeepers afterward he hadn't addresssed how the kids went from being the children of help to the 1%.

Arnold was probably too young to understand it just accepted that he gets to do fun stuff and does not have to worry/does not have to worry about serious stuff.

That's one of the flaws of this show it doesn't really address what happened to their prior life they are 'magically' whisked away into the series plot....like a cinderella story.

It's for families and little kids. But looking back (nobody predicted internet and youtube...etc) there are really big holes in the series. How do these kids deal with their past life?

Yes Kimberly never taunts them disrepects them but they have experiences which she does not having grown up comparatively poor. Drummond did pay them at least min wage but it was obvious that she was help.

This was a COMEDY geared for kids and families, plus in another era where TV was different.

If you don't like the concept of this show, then create your own. It sounds like a compelling drama, that would address the issues you mention. You even throw in some humor.

What was there for him to "address"? Their mother died (I don't remember if the show said how) and they needed a place to live and someone to take care of them.

reply

For all of his wealth though they don't ever get grief counseling. She was their biological mother. Even if she had less wealth she was their flesh and blood. And they left one neighborhood and went to another to live. That was part of the credits. Family dying is a pretty big life event.

reply

Lots of children lose a parent and don't get counseling. My father lost his mother as a child, and he and his siblings did not get counseling. Back then, children didn't go to counseling over everything that happened in their lives. Today they go for counseling if the school bus breaks down and they have to walk two blocks to the school (that really happened in Pennsylvania.)

Also, millions of children move. A man I work with moved once with his children after losing his home to a storm, and now they are moving again. There is no "addressing" it. It is just happening, Kids dealt with the first move and will deal with this one.

Also, they don't show everything. They don't show them going to the bathroom, it can be assumed they did. They don't show them eating every meal, we assume they ate. They are not shown every day in school, it can be assumed they went. Te same can be assumed here - assume they did get counseling or they did not.

The point is, Drummond could have just walked away and allowed them to go into foster care, possibly (and likely) separated. They got to live a far better life than they would have had he not taken them in. And all Willis could do was give attitude.

Also, why didn't Willis have the same attitude when his sperm donor (the "father" who walked out and never looked back) suddenly showed up?

reply

I don't get what people are chirping on about?
It's called different strokes because people are different and have different perspectives on things. So my message to the OP is 'Watchoo talkin' bout Willis'?

reply

The show was that the different economic classes were supposed to be different.

You werent supposed to change the world like All in the Family or Maude attempted....you were supposed to accept that Phillip Drummond was supposed to be rich and the only reason those two boys were now able to move up was that their maid mother died. Economic stratification IS how society works after all.

reply

Exactly what I said. Willis was ungrateful and gave nothing but attitude. What was his problem? Would he rather have gone to foster care?

reply

Willis and Arnold's father died before their mother did.

reply

No, their mother died first. He had abandoned them. he showed up later after they were living with Drummond.
