The Drummond Penthouse

The things I noticed about that fancy pad in the sky are:

Phil paid the hefty sum of $3,500 a month in rent. That would be $42,000 per year.

There are 4 bedrooms - 3 upstairs and one downstairs behind the kitchen (housekeeper's chambers).

The front room is extremely high meaning the bedrooms are probably above Phil's study and the kitchen.

There are two staircases to go upstairs.

A neighboring apartment was once next door with an adjoining balcony, but it's totally gone the time Arnold is later stuck on the building's ledge.

I'm guessing that mystery door underneath the grand staircase in the living room leads to the main floor bathroom.

There's a back door exit in the kitchen meaning it's probably the fire escape stairs route.

The chauffeur of Phil's limo is never ever seen. He must sit downstairs with the car all day, not even going up to the Drummond residence for a coffee break in the kitchen.

The sections of the house never shown are Phil's study, the housekeeper's bedroom and Kimberley's bedroom.

After Phil's "housekeeper of many, many years" dies, the next two housekeepers hired are there for only short terms.

There is also a room with a spa in it. Although it wasn't seen very much.

They showed Mr. Drummon's study a couple of times in S1 & S2, this is the room with all the books, it was called the "library" at least once, and in another ep he had a meeting with his lawyer in it.

The oval doorframe downstairs goes to the housekeepers room, that was always my implication because she often went into there to got to her bedroom, it also wraps around and connects into the kitchen from the backway. (The kitchen had a total of 4 different entrances/exits up until S8 when it was remodeled.)

It was implied on at least some eps that Kimberly's bedroom was on the other side of the powder room between Arnold and Willis's room like the BB.

Mr. Drummond probably had multiple drivers at least over the course of the run of the series. I can remember seeing one of his drivers in at least 1 ep.

Mr. Drummond's bedroom was also shown at least once or twice (I remember in the ep he got married, it was seen).

The backdoor in the kitchen has been used as an entrance at least once that I can remember during S1 (the ep when Mr. Drummond hired a detective to find Arnold's stuffed animal).

They also showed the upstairs hallways multiple times, leading from the boys' bedroom. These always looked very nicely decorated and appeared large enough to be rooms in their own right.

One thing I found somewhat interesting is that at times (not often, but it did happen at least 2 or 3 times) Mr. Drummond and Kimberly would ring the doorbell to their own penthouse. I realize even though it was in a controlled-access building their own front door to the penthouse would remain locked. It just seemed odd that Kimberly and especially Mr. Drummond didn't use a key to get in. On some occasions they also had a doorman that would call up to them to let them know that a visitor was coming.

I liked Willis's and Arnold's bunk beds because it wasn't in the usual design. I also liked those little steps built into the floor leading to the bunk bed stairs. It looked very unique (almost like a mini sunken living room) and probably something that isn't seen too often outside of the TV universe.

There were also various implications that they had neighbors on their floor (not including the one right next door in S1). Just saw an ep from S2 when a neighbor was robbed who came running to Mr. Drummond's.

It was interesting that they didn't have at least 3 or 4 more bedrooms, in a penthouse that grand and large. I remember there was an ep when Pearl was asked to go stay with her mother briefly because there wasn't room for her and she got bent out of shape. They didn't even have to show these extra bedrooms, they just could have mentioned a spare room or guest room.

I know a lot of people don't like it, I like how the living room and dining room looked when it was remodeled in S8. I especially like how they had the couches in the living room facing each other instead of the cameras (again this was done on the BB), this is rarely done on a TV sitcom, there is usually 1 big one facing the fourth wall which is almost always pushed away from the real wall and right in the middle of the room.

I like how the live-in housekeepers all become "members of the family" just as soon as they are hired (especially Mrs. Garrett and Adelaide) and move in right away. This was a very common TV principal that is probably inspired again by the BB.

Mrs Garret gets spun off into the facts of life and I think they got Adelade on short hire--but she did not 'quite fit' the casting for the series which involved working with several kids on a family sitcom

Pearl seemed to be what they were looking for--a younger Mrs Garret.

The redesign of the apartment was bc they had torn down the original set--it also was bc they moved networks and the new network wanted to put it's own stamp on the series to get 'new viewers'. Having seen both through reruns---I prefer the first since it shows he has 'money'. The second screams Miami Vice.

That rent would be almost $12,000 monthly today
