Why was Sue Ellen the alcoholic ?

They all drank all day everyday. They had bars in every room. Why was Sue Ellen the one who got labeled? They all needed help IMO

You're right. Drinking whiskey all day everyday is totally normal. Thanks for your 2 cents but you can keep it. You need it more than I do :)

YOU RESPONDED TO YOURSELF!

According to Alcoholics Anonymous UK, who say they have no unique definition for alcoholism, it may be described as a physical compulsion, together with a mental obsession. Apart from having an enormous craving for alcohol, an alcoholic often yields to that craving at the worst possible times. The alcoholic knows neither when nor how to stop drinking.

Definition - an alcoholic is a person, while alcoholism is the illness. An alcoholic suffers from alcoholism. Alcoholism is a long-term (chronic) disease.
Alcoholics are obsessed with alcohol and cannot control how much they consume, even if it is causing serious problems at home, work, and financially.
Alcohol abuse generally refers to people who do not display the characteristics of alcoholism, but still have a problem with it - they are not as dependent on alcohol as an alcoholic is; they have not yet completely lost their control over its consumption.

Lol okay doc. We could have had a polite discussion about it if you weren't so condescending to start. I just found it partly funny how they all call her the alcoholic while drinking all day. I was only 1/2 serious anyway. I was pointing out all the booze on the show. I hope it feels good to be right. Sorry, I was drunk when I responded to myself. Kidding. My sincere apologies in getting you all wound up. It's only IMDB.

First of all, she has a PROBLEM with alcohol, the others don't.

Second of all, she gets REALLY DRUNK, while the others don't, and she makes really stupid decisions, including getting blackout drunk several times in a short time, the others don't.

She uses alcohol as a solution, as a crutch, as some important core help in her life that she can always rely on and fall back to.

The others don't.

Other people, while possibly drinking every day, do not let alcohol become any kind of problem, and their whole MOTIVATION for drinking is completely different. It's like.. if you watch a movie for fun, it's normal. If you do nothing but watch movies obsessively and feel you can't stay 2 seconds without watching a movie, you have a problem.

Alcoholism is not when you drink for recreation, fun, or in any other controlled and social way. Alcoholism is when it becomes a problem, an obsession, an uncontrollable urge.

Do you see J.R. or any of the others using alcohol as a solution for everything, or a sidenote that can be recreational?

The others use alcohol MODERATELY, they don't take a bottle of whiskey with them to bed.

The last point; this was a different time. Alcohol was everywhere, 'home bars' were common, people expected to see a selection of alcohol when they went to places, and it was a cultural norm.

Things changed, and when you look at past cultural norms through the lens of modern times, you have to adjust your judgment accordingly, if you want to be fair and truthful, or even logical about it.

"The others don't."

They would if the writers didn't ignore the fact they drink like alcoholics.

"Disease"

You just come down with it. You're a victim. It's not like you made a decision to drink, over and over, and too much, until you were addicted.
