Who did you want in the Superfriends?

Space Ghost. I know he's from the future. He is owned by Hanna Barbera.

I wanted more of the regular JLAers, like Elongated Man and Red Tornado. I also wanted to see Adam Strange, who appeared in several JLA stories, when I first encountered the comics. Plastic Man was an odd one, in the original Super Friends season.

I would have liked to have seen Joker in the Legion of Doom. He wasn't available because he was being used in "The New Adventures of Batman," but I think he would have added a great "loose cannon" quality to the show, assuming he was used properly.

He was one of the characters they originally envisioned using, until they found out Filmation had the rights to the character, for the New Adv of Batman. There is a presentation piece (by Alex Toth) that features the Joker and Catwoman with a different group of Legionnaires, many of whom were Captain Marvel enemies.

Yeah, I had heard something similar. It's ironic that Batman has some of the most recognizable villains in all of comics, yet so few were available for this series because of the Filmation series.

That presentation piece featured mostly enemies of Batman, Captain Marvel, and the Flash. When you think about it, they offered up more choices than most characters. Unfortunately for Hanna-Barbera, Batman and Captain Marvel were spoken for, as were most of their enemies (though it was several years before Filmation made use of the Marvel villains).

The presentation piece had Dr Sivana (who appears to be the leader, as he is the focal point of the group), Beautia Sivana, Mr Atom, Kull, Grodd, Heatwave, Captain Cold, Abra-Cadabra, Cheetah, Sinestro, Poson Ivy, Penguin and the Joker. So, you have 4 Marvel enemies, 4 Flash, 3 Batman, a Green Lantern and a Wonder Woman villain. There is also a model sheet for Catwoman. Both the model sheet and presentation art are dated 1978, so it's hard to say when Catwoman was considered for the mix. Obviously, she couldn't be used because Filmation had her (they had Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze and Clayface). In the end, you got Luthor, Brainiac, Toyman, Bizarro, Giganta, Cheetah, Captain Cold, Grodd, Riddler, Scarecrow, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy and Black Manta. So, you get 4 Superman villains, 2 Wonder Woman (Giganta was actually a Golden Age WW enemy, a gorilla evolved into a human female), 2 Flash, 2 Batman, 2 Green Lantern (one Golden Age Green lantern enemy, Grundy, and one Silver Age GL enemy, Sinestro), and an Aquaman foe. The later lineup definitely fits the JLA a bit more, with Superman dominating (while he wasn't represented, in the first batch). It would also appear that the JLA side was supposed to include Captain Marvel; but couldn't. Don't know whether the absence of Superman foes suggests that Superman wasn't originally considered to be part of the JLA (maybe CM as a substitute) or whether they were just going for colorful gimmicky villains that would work well in animation, without heavy violence.
