What kind of blackmail material did Chamberlain have, and on who?

He was in every big tv mini series made in the 70's and 80's.

Yes I remmember he was in Shogun and that was pretty awsome - at the time.
Yes I'd like to know what he had too?

reply

Read his imdb bio. He was extremely popular as Dr. Kildare in the early 60's and his female television fan base never went away. Richard Chamberlain starring in a tv miniseries was as close to a high ratings guarantee as you could get.

reply

What did he have? Talent, great looks, experience as an actor and a reputation for being a nice guy on sets, a huge fan following...

reply

Probably all of that to the producers! I have never thought he was that great though, but I do remember my mother liking him.

I did however love him in "Thorn Birds" and well also as McKeeg in Centennial..But that said, I think it it was more due to the character he portayed and that I loved them, not so much him. Any other actor could have played those parts too I think, and I would have loved them too..

reply

He was pretty good in "The Count of Monte Cristo", even if that wasn't a mini-series.

reply

and that movie should be on DVD. I was able to retape his Man in the Iron Mask about 10 years ago, and I have a poor quality taping of Count. These should both be on dvd.
Doncha just love the parts where he is counting as he gets his revenge?
"One." "Two."
And that part where he comes down the hall and whips that cape off.
You should read his autobiography, what a man! I've had a crush on him since I was 9 years old when Dr. Kildare came on tv.

reply

That should be "... and on WHOM"?

reply

Chamberlain was a big ratings draw, and studio bean counters have a funny way of loving that.

reply

No blackmail - just a good agent.

reply

he was what we called a "heart throb" and what they call a "hunk" today. he delivered the audience, that's for sure. when you do that consistently, they call you back.

reply

He was also a hunk who'd gone to England to study acting intensively, and came back with some serious 'actor cred', at least serious to the likes of the Hollywood crowd. So casting him wasn't just an enticement to draw female viewers; for a long time, his presence in a teleplay gave it that sort of 'touch of class' factor that some producers hungered to have attached to their work.

reply

he seems to be the go-to guy if you needed a major character in a miniseries at that time. it is what it is.

reply

I have read that he was sleeping with a number of gay Producers in Hollywood. Perhaps that had something to do with it. But to be fair, he was a pretty good actor and women loved him before he came out.
