Why chuck the Liberator?

Why did the script writers decide they had to get rid of the coolest ship ever to be on TV?

I mean the fourth series was okay, but it was never the same.

It was originally going to be the end of the series, but it was recommissioned for a fourth season as many a B7 fan will know. The third season finale (Terminal) is probably the weakest of the last-series episodes, since Series 3 doesn't have a definite plot or story arc like the first two (even Series 4 had a loose plot/arc).

The Liberator sets were wearing out and falling apart. Since the sets were quite expensive, they didn't have the budget to make new ones that were so big and so costly. So they ditched the Liberator and built Scorpio sets, which were smaller and cheaper.

Although, I suppose the Liberator is what B7 is known for(I even had the Corgi toy of it as a child) - I've always had a soft spot for the Scorpio. It just looked like a cool ship.

I kinda-sorta watched Blake's 7 for the first three seasons (I was four years old when it started) but I only really got into it in Season 4 (though I've come to appreciate the earlier seasons as an adult). So while I was familiar with Blake commanding the Liberator, I have more fond childhood memories of Avon commanding the Scorpio. You're right, it was a very cool ship.

On a related note, the guns were much cooler in Season 4 (I never did like those flashlight-looking things) and Glynis "Soolin" Barber was, er, quite distracting too...

Funny I preferred the last season with Scorpio and "Slave," the AI running things! Both Zen and Slave had their "last gasps" death soliloquys that still get me "verklempt!"

Oh those original toys were so disappointing! Preferred the mercenary plotline on Scorpio as well! ;-)

Agreed! While not as powerful- Scorpio was definitely the cooler ship.

No chance.

The Liberator is the most beautiful starship of all time. It is even better looking than the starship that inspired its design - the Enterprise NCC 1701.

That was my understanding too...parts of it were lost and/or damaged in transit between the series'. But the ep where the Lib is destroyed and Zen dies was very poignant, one of the strongest.
