why is there no sexual tension on the Liberator ?

I know they all have bigger problems on their hands, survival being one but the female crew are very attractive as well as being intelligent and they wear clothing which is hardly NASA and is supposed to be sexy . the guys never notice

I dunno, I always felt there was something bubbling beneath the surface with Cally and Avon but it kind of soured a bit through season 3 as she became more of a moral voice and avon started making more morally questionable choices (going after revenge on Shrinker for instance) whereas i'm pretty sure Vila tried it on with every woman on the crew (possibly not jenna) but got shot down each time.

really? i could see that it might not appeal to a lot of people because it was quite odd and that temple scene at the start goes on for FAR too long but other than that i quite enjoyed it, it was almost like B7 meets dario argento or something! ...and yes that is how he gets the power ring

Blake once mentioned to Avon and Cally in 'The harvest of Kairos' about it not being the right time or the place (Avon was trying to get Cally to use her telepathic powers to figure out a life form was try to reveal to her and Blake waltzed into the cabin).

But, yeah, the show - for being remarkably mature at the time - did keep sex as limited as possible. Only in "Space Fall", "Cygnus Alpha", and "Sand" did sexuality ever really get mentioned. One or two other scenes had characters chiding Vila's lust for Cally (and once for Dayna if I recall...)

I just decided and wrote it off that none of them had the hots (physically or emotionally in terms of a sexual relationship) for anyone else on the ship.

That was Tarrant, Blake was long gone by the time of 'harvest of kairos'

A thing about Cally that wasn`t fully explored was the fact that her people, the Auronar while of human origin used cloning as the normal method of reproduction.
Add to that their Psi abilities then there`s the little question of sexual orientation or whether that was even an issue for them!
If you`re not a telepath though forget it!
Cally was supposed to be something of an oddball in her society which explains why she stayed on the Liberator, she`d never been convicted of anything and was to start with unknown to the Federation authorities untill she joined up with Blake.

So, while it looks like she was the closest thing Avon had to a friend on the ship the relationship may have not gone much further.
Avon seems to have been carrying something of a torch for Anna Grant anyway so that was another problem, he just wasn`t that interested in anybody.
Once he found out though that Anna had betrayed and set him up for arrest its odd how his interest in Servelan develops, the man clearly has a habit of falling for the wrong woman!

I don`t think there is much doubt that Blake and Jenna had something going on `off screen`. We eventually find out in the final episode that the two of them joined up again after Blake left the Liberator, but she was killed later and Blake clearly felt her loss.

As for Villa, as mentioned before he tried it on with all of the female characters at one time or another (well maybe not Servelan!) only to be rejected, he DID get lucky once though with Kerril in `City On the Edge of the World`!

With the later characters, I wonder if something was gradually developing between Tarrant and Dayna though it may not have gone very far.

Soolin was very `come too close and I`ll shoot you` and there wasn`t that much development of the character in the final season beyond that.

Well, kind of. She may have technically been unknown to the Federation, but she was already working with the freedom fighters on Saurian Major, and was (as far as we know) pretty much stuck there on her own after they were all wiped out, so it's not like she had a bright future anywhere else. Her only plan at that point was to single-handedly raid the Federation complex on the planet and go out in a blaze of glory ("to destroy until I am destroyed") so if the Liberator hadn't shown up she'd have been dead.

Well... dead a bit sooner, anyway.

Tarrant and Dayna got it on for the greater good of scientific research in Ultraworld, let's not forget. I'm sure they hated every minute of it.

Maybe the sand "encouraged" Tarrant and Servalan since it needed them to get busy making more food for it. Or maybe they thought what the hell, we're going to die anyway so might as well entertain ourselves.

Simple, Terry Nation didn't write porn.

He wrote a meaningful sci-fi drama about a group on fugitives surviving a situtation bigger than themselves. "Sexual Tension" as you call it, would've just slowed the show down to the sentimental nonsense and bed-hopping which too many of today's series provide to satistify shippers.

Not to mention turning great female characters, Jenna, Cally and Servalan, beauties with brains, into nothing more than eye-candy and airheads.

Blake's 7 had so much going on, it simply didn't need anymore 'sexual tension'.

Happiness must be earned.

Hi Blake Fans!

No sexual tension on the Liberator?
Not so !

I'm watching the whole series through 1 ep per day M-Th so should take up until Christmas. I'll watch for sexual tension hints as this is a fun idea.

But right off the top of my memory, moments I've already noticed:

1] This is an obvious one, but ep2 Spacefall, Raiker mawkishly propositions Jenna and this is a motivating factor for a) Raiker to act fiendishly b) the audience to cheer Blake in attempts to lead an exodus for this horrible place c) Jenna is firmly established the audience as the alpha female.

2] ep4 Time Squad... Blake and Jenna hold hands as they run out of air in the capsule. Jenna has already resisted Avon's recent attempts to abandon Blake in Cygnus Alpha. These things are not sexual tension per se, but establish Blake and Jenna as a couple, which is a structure that must be in place for later episodes' sexual tension.

3] end of ep11 Bounty, I always like the moment I've dubbed battle of the blondes... Sarkoff's daughter gives Blake a saucy "Goodbye Blake" and Jenna bootily struts forward and teleports her out with a dismissive jaw/hair swoosh. "This is my territory".

4] ep16 Weapon... as Blake & Jenna are researching Imipac via ORAC, Jenna words here sentence a particular way... "Perhaps its another ORAC, perhaps we could breed them". That wording catches Blake off-guard. In another moment, as he's giving guidance instructions to Zen, he slips in his subtle response "Alright, let's get closer".

5] as Avon & Vila are teleporting down to join the raiding party/recon the Forbidden Zone in ep18 Pressure Point (Blake & Gan are already down in the ruined church)... Jenna gives Avon a extra little frisson in her "good luck"; an extended moment of eye contact. She is hedging her bets, if Blake screws up and Avon gains the upper hand as leader, she still wants to be associated with the alpha male. She's a survivor remember.

6] ep20 Killer... Blake announces he will teleport down to Q-base to warn the authorities of the approaching derelict. Jenna objects and Blake insists "I have been down before!" Jenna pouts and turns away, this causes Blake to soften his mood and give her the reassurance she wants. After he leaves, watch the knowing smile on her face as she departs screen right. She likes that he responds to her objections

7] ep21 Hostage, at the very end Blake gives his cute cousin Inga a little peck on the lips, Jenna is the first one to, with a furrowed brow, speak with a raised voice "Shouldn't we be leaving?"

8] mid way thru ep23 Voice from the Past, Blake has just teleported to the asteroid. Jenna, Avon and Cally are locked in the calisthenics room looking out the window... watch Jenna goad Avon a little as she suggests he could "make an effort" and draws a little attention to her cleavage. (By this point Avon has probably given up on flirting with her as its obvious she is spoken for by Blake, and Avon's been spending more time with Cally lately.) Hey she likes the attention even if she's not truly considering him as a future consort... you cannot put your hand on your heart and swear that no women out there do this.

9] ep29 Volcano... Cally baits Vila with "She's pretty for one thing," and Avon consummates with, "We've seen you not really noticing."

10] ep33 Children of Auron... as Cally rallies the crew to object to Avon's revenge mission, Avon is adjusting/tuning plastic conical machine components with a probe. The symbolic representation of the phallic probe about to enter the plastic chamber but being held back with an tense hand grip and audible noise are very obvious visual director's shorthand.

11] ep38 Death-Watch... Cally is derisive of Tarrant's "crude" ideas of entertainment & pleasure, snubs Vila but gallantly capitulates to a little chase out of the room, Dayna snubs Vila's ill-conceived attempt to give her drinks... and the Avon & Servalan kiss was probably their hottest... but Avon & Servalan are a thread all their own.

12] ep40 Rescue... "His taste in wine and women are impeccable." Say no more.

13] ep42 Traitor... Avon's softer side with Soolin? Is he testing the waters for attraction? "Tarrant is young... brave... handsome... there are 3 good reasons not to like him." There is a clip on YT that's titled: "Avon, O love you man, but what the hell was this?" I think that sums it up.

14] Unexpected, but its there... ep51 Warlord... now that Zukan's daughter is on the scene, Dayna feels jilted... note her hand on Vila's arm in the Xenon Base control room as Avon gives the instructions for rerouting the airflow. She removes it fairly quickly. Is she considering the next available guy? Hoping to make Tarrant jealous? There was not enough time for this nub to develop anywhere.

Blimey, that`s pretty comprehensive!!!One of the reasons Sally Knyvette cited as leaving the show was she was frustrated with the writers` inability to develop a relationship between her and Blake. There`s definitely something there but it`s rather downplayed in a repressed British sort of way.The writers gained a bit more confidence later on with the rather twisted relationship Avon had with Servalan:"I`m going to visit a sick friend."You can imagine Blake and Jenna having a "clean" relationship whereas Avon and Servalan...well...

Latest notes upon going thru the series again... ep14 Redemption:

13 or 14 minutes in, the Lib has been attacked and the crew have repairs underway. Cally asks Avon if there is anything she can do to help. Avon's immediate response, "Strip down the auto nav controls..."
A bit mawkish I know, but can also be read in a Freudian way in that quick responses are telling.

Later, Avon and Jenna has been detained in a holding cell in the Alta Super-Station. The third glimpse of them passing the time comes just after the scene where Blake is rescued into the hidden elevator by Roy Evans who explains "[The Alta's] aren't really people at all." Jenna seems to be seated in such a way as to cuddle with Avon, its not unreasonable that she would like him to put his arm around her for some comfort in presumably their last few moments. After no response she shifts and gives him a frustrated, askance glare; "Why is he being such a block of ice?"

Latest observations:

ep19, Trial: Avon attempts his softer side on Jenna ("I find the idea of being wealthy rather appealing") but she rolls her eyes and he quickly engages with Vila to keep the momentum of his treatise going.
Later, after Blake's apology message has played, Avon asks Jenna if she thought Blake was being genuine... she wordlessly responds by turning her back and leaving the room... and Avon acknowledges his overstepping the line by exhaling and dropping his arm while snapping his fingers in the classic "missed that one" maneuver.

ep21, Hostage: The crew watches Travis' ransom demand on the main screen. He announces that he has Inga detained, and that if Blake does not come to Xbar, then the girl, regretfully, dies. The first words to be spoken after the message ends are a sharp & disdainful question from Jenna: "Who *exactly* is Inga?"

Watching the series in its entirety reveals arcs that are easy to miss with single episode viewings. There seems to be a subtle mini-arc taking place with Tarrant & Dayna's relationship late in series 3 and early series 4. They seemed to be a regular item up through the oft-quoted camp Ultraworld scene. In ep38 Death-Watch, after Tarrant has enthusiastically backed up Avon's idea to attend the Teal-Vandor Convention, Dayna makes the disparaging remark to Tarrant "I haven't seen you move that positively in weeks." In ep39 Terminal, the pairings are Cally/Tarrant and Dayna/Vila. It seems that Tarrant and Dayna's romance has cooled.
Vila made an open attempt at flirtation with Dayna in ep38 Death-Watch; "Have a drink Dayna" and then bemoaned in ep39 Terminal: Tarrant's "We can't always have what we want", is followed by Vila's dejected "I had noticed." In ep40 Rescue, Vila makes a second attempt at open flirtation with Dayna: "Would you rather be snuggling up to those snakes?" He thought this was pretty clever and was not expecting Dayna's squirming away with "Can I think about it and let you know?" Later in ep40 Rescue, Dayna is chiding Tarrant in the subterranean spiral stairway for being low on energy. He explains "You'll be old yourself one day." Was there an equivalent of the little blue pill in 1981? The B7 universe visualized so many other future trends so well...
Tarrant & Dayna seem to reconnect as an item by ep42 Traitor... Tarrant lands a double entendre to Avon's description of Helotrix's gaining of independence... "Until the Federation *grabbed it back" he says as he simultaneously claims Dayna for his landing party. A few scenes later, when the communicators are malfunctioning, Dayna verbally expresses that it would have been a good idea for her to have brought her night clothes on her outing with Tarrant. Nice.

ep 48 Sand: Even ORAC experiences some "sexual tension"!
O: Teleport? I am not programmed... 3 squared to the principle...
D: Oh no!
O: I love you.
V: ORAC!
O: My emotions are deeper than the seeds of space. 1x1 is only possible in the ultra-dimensional.
A: Turn ORAC off.
O: I love you!
A: [shock] Off!
O: We will be lovers for a little while, or perhaps, for a long while. Who knows?
S: I do. [disconnects]
V: What a thought!

the sexual tension between Tarrant and Servalan in that episode is also obvious.

Was a more innocent time. Over the years tv shows have gradually gotten raunchier and raunchier, and now can't get a single rating without an undertone of sexual tension. E.g, The Doctor and Rose.

reply

I wouldn't say there's no sexual tension. Jenna seems to have some feelings for Blake, even if he never seems to regard her as anything more than a friend and comrade (and she always takes a back seat to his mission). Jenna even seems a bit jealous of Blake's connection with Inga, although given that Inga is his first cousin and probably too young for him anyway, that may just be distaste. In an earlier episode she just seemed amused when Tyce was making goo-goo eyes at Blake, so who knows?

There's some definite hints of affection between Avon and Cally in Season 3, but it never really goes anywhere. It's more likely mutual respect and a growing sense of familiarity, but they would have made a good match.

And of course Vila's got a weakness for pretty girls - he's quite taken with Dayna when she first joins the crew, which is a shame since she spends more and more time bullying him as the series goes on.
