What load of crap, and for those prices, too.

"Remastered" and "definitive" in no way mean altering the content with new CGI, then chopping the top and bottom off of each frame so the image "fits" the incompatible aspect ratios of new tv screens - yet that is exactly what is going on in these sets.

That's every bit as unacceptable as the "pan and scan" format that people find so intolerable.

I don't understand why anyone especially a fan, would reinforce further poor behavior from the people at Universal Home Video by giving them money for adulterated product.

It's funny how, when wiser, mature heads prevail, digital technology can be used judiciously and prudently to properly restore and preserve the legacies of certain classic media. Witness the recent dvd release of the 1966 Batman, whose licensors wisely know enough to digitally clean up image and color - and nothing more - leaving original effects and original aspect ratio the hell alone.

On the other hand, put that same ability and decision making into the hands of marketing teams and taste-free pixel jockeys, and the results will fall to *beep* every time.

If you have to have your vintage tv programming "fixed" so it bows to your blu-ray, instead of the other way around, maybe you need to get rid of the blu-ray.

Blu-ray.com says this:

Newly remastered in 16:9 widescreen presentation for the very first time, Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection features both pioneering series meticulously reformatted to be optimized for the HDTV viewing experience. Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection also includes both series in 4:3 Full Frame as they were originally televised, plus the theatrical version of the premiere episode "Saga of a Star World," presented in 1.85:1 widescreen for the ultimate collector.

I guess if you want the original framing you'll have to buy the "Definitive" Edition. 

$80-$100?! Surely that's just a SRP that will come down the closer we get to the release date. I want BSG on BluRay, but I have also grown fond of eating.

Does anyone know if the special features listed are new or are they recycled from the standard DVD releases?

If anything adding G80 to the set should bring down the price by $50 not increase it.

They're from the previous 2003 DVD boxed set. There were a couple of interesting extras on the German Blu-Ray set (particularly the GalactiCon convention footage), but Universal's lawyers have reportedly prevented their inclusion in the Region 1 and 2 BD collections (the German set was released by Koch Media, not Universal, and as such had final control over the included content).

Ahh okay, thanks for the info.

What?!? 

Looks like i'll jut be getting that German release then?

Otherwise without those bonuses; GalactiCon convention footage the german set has, i'd simply be paying for another higher def DVD collection once again (i.e. i'd be double dipping is all). Sorry but for my wad of cash i want and need some new extras i haven't previously seen yet as i already own the 2003 DVD set and will still hold onto those (Always) etc.

My thoughts exactly.

I don't think 16:9 would be too bad, as long as it's true tilt and scan and not just center cut. Somebody should look at each shot and judge where lost image wouldn't affect the shot too much, whether it be all at the top, all at the bottom or various percentages in between. If they just cut the same percentages off the top and bottom in every scene, then it would be terrible, with tops of heads often butting up against the top of the image or even being cut off.

Let's not forget that the original Galactica was shown in widescreen back in 1978, in its theatrical version.

The only thing that makes this worth buying is the excellent picture quality. It looks MUCH better than the new "complete series" version does. Surprisingly, Universal didn't seem to clean up the episodes as much as they could/should have. I watched the 2 side by side, and noticed this in NOT true widescreeen either. It seems the top and bottom portion of the screen were blacked out purposely to make it appear widescreen. If you compare the 2 versions, you'll notice you see the exacts same things on the left and right side of the screen.

reply

Damn, I hate that. They might as well have kept the original aspect ratio. Blacking out the top and bottom alters the director's vision and the way he wanted to present each scene.
