What was the difference between this and G force
Was one an edited version of the other or were they separate episodes ?

Battle of the Planets and G-Force are separate productions created using the same Japanese source material. Each series used their own production crew and voice casts. Battle of the Planets was more heavily edited than G-Force, so G-Force is generally considered to more akin to the Japanese Gatchaman storylines than Battle of the Planets. But Battle of the Planets is generally considered to be the superior production because of factors like the voice acting and the new music added to the series, which are of higher quality than what appeared in G-Force. These are generalities, of course, and there are those who would vehemently argue the case for their favorite series being better than the other.
It should also be noted that both Battle of the Planets and G-force each used 85 of the 105 Gatchaman episodes, but each used a different selection of 85 episodes. As a result, there are episodes in either series that do not appear in the other.
